Gambler sues casino to return more than $673,000 of losses

From the Detroit News:

Detroit -- Italo Mario Parise has sworn off gambling for good.

The 61-year-old professional engineer indulged his appetite for cards, slots and game tables at MotorCity Casino in Detroit for a decade, losing $673,854 of his own money.

Looking back, Parise says he believes he was brainwashed by the casino to keep coming back to gamble more.

And now that he says his head is clear, Parise -- who says he hasn't set foot in a gambling hall since March -- wants his money back from the casino he blames for his losses under an obscure 1961 Michigan law.

I swear... the people who think this kind of case is winnable (and the lawyers who take them)... boggles my mind.

An online casino player tried to sue William Hill a year or so back for over $1million he lost over a period of a couple of years.

Needless to say he was not successful.

If this guy is successful it would set a very dangerous precedent.

We all have lost money at casinos. Yet we accept this is the price we pay for the entertainment value we get from playing at them. We have also won whilst playing.

If you gamble, you should gamble for entertainment and not to try and win a life changing amount. The man who is bringing this lawsuit is an adult and therefore has to take responsibilities for his actions. No one held a gun to his head and forced him to gamble.

Likewise if he had a gambling problem, how was the casino to know this? All casinos have highrollers, does this mean all their high rollers have a problem.

Did they fail him on this front?

People would rather blame someone else than take responsibility for their own actions - it's like the people who were suing McDonalds because they were overweight.

His day in court is for pure entertainment purposes, when it's over you'll find him in the nearest casino. With anything up to 2 years pay-minus lawyer fees. He will still have more than change left, as the's face it;>) having a lawyer for up to 2 years or more is cheaper than gambling.

lol, and maybe I could sue Absolut for all the stupid things I ever did while using their product. Maybe they'll settle out of court and send me a free case!

Guess I could try to sue the casinos for all the money I lost... but then... they'd turn and sue me to get back the money for the 'free' rooms/suites, food, booze..... never mind....

WOW

People will do anything to get out of taking responsibility. I let my bro. look at this, he's a lawyer (feel free to insert joke, but me and my family have probably used them all). He wasn't surprised that someone would take this case, but says it may be for publicity for the lawyer. He doesn't think this guy has a chance, especially since he claims not to be addicted. Why would the casino intervene when he doesn't even think he has a problem.
