(Ala.) Gambling study: Jobs, taxes from casinos

    Opinion piece ...

Gambling study: Jobs, taxes from casinos
    Tuesday, February 10, 2009
AN ECONOMIC impact study of the casinos run by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians shows the operations create thousands of jobs and generate millions of dollars in tax revenue even though the tribe itself is exempt from paying taxes.

The Poarch Creek Economic Impact study, conducted by the National Indian Gaming Association, attributes more than 4,600 jobs and nearly $56 million in state and federal tax revenue last year to the casinos.

Imagine, then, the economic impact of legal, full casino gambling anywhere in the state. ....

I dont see how they can call that a study. They didnt include a single negative externality in their calculations, quite understandable when you see who had "ordered" the study.

Even though I'm a true gambler, I have to agree with spider on this one. Not once do they mention anything about crime rates - whether they've increased or decreased, neighboring property values - gone up or down? Any increase in local bankruptcy/house forclosures as a direct result of problem gambling? Stuff like that...Talk about a biased article.

If they want a true study done that takes everything into account, maybe next time they can get a 3rd party to perform it - someone other than "The National Indian Gaming Association."
Operators: If you don't know what Transparency means, then here you go.....now how about practicing it?

Transparency, as used in the humanities and in a social context more generally, implies openness, communication, and accountability. It is a metaphorical extension of the meaning a "transparent" object is one that can be seen through. ...
