newbie poker questions

Hi,
I am very new to poker and I wish to understand more henceforth I post these questions and hope members will help me.

1) Am I right to say that in poker games, we are playing against other players and not the dealer (or house).

2) If we are playing against other poker players, then what do these casinos earn?

Thanks

1) Correct

2) In tournaments, you pay a fee on top of the buy-in, which is what the house keeps (the rest goes into the prize pool). In regular (ring) games, the house takes rake (a portion of the total pot) to keep as their fee. They usually list their rake schedule on their website.

Hello fellow Asian,

As a newbie, I suggest you to try your hand at the freerolls first to get the feel of what poker is all about. Most of them will be games on Texas Hold'em althought there are some Omaha games as well. Get a grip on things before depositing your own hard-earned cash and plkaying for real. Good luck mate.

I belive it comes to 50 cents a player per hand.

Some places are different.
All NL games are usually 5% up to $3. Limit games are usually 5% up to $.50 for $.50/$1 and below. $1/$2 is usually $.25 per $5 up to $1 and $2/$4+ is usually $1 per $20 up to $3.

For most poker games;

The "House" (poker room/casino) collects a "Rake" from every pot at the end of the hand, before the winner collects the pot (their winnings).

The "Rake" is a small percentage of every cash pot, usually about 3% to 5%, different poker rooms charge different Rakes.

Every player at the table that antes or is in the Blinds or calls (puts money in the pot), contributes to the "Rake".

In this way the "House" is not concerned with who won or lost the hand, all the House wants to see are lots of large pots... so they can collect large Rakes.

As has been pointed out, Poker Tournaments are a little different. The Tournaments usually charge a up front flat fee that the House collects that is in addition to the Tournament buy-in.

play poker halfway then computer hang or booted out

I have another newbie question.

(1) Assuming I am playing some poker games with a group of players, then my computer hang and I need to reboot, so what is going to happen to this ongoing game?

(2) What must I do to prevent other players from booting me out.

Thanks

1) Some poker rooms offer disconnect protect which would put you all in for the chips you had in the pot. Other poker rooms stopped offering this, especially in NL games since it can be abused.

2) I'm not sure what you mean here. Other players can't boot you if I understand you correctly.

May I also add that some poker rooms that offer all-in protection in cases of disconnection only allow for this on 2-3 occasions to prevent some players from abusing this function. After that, the disconnection will be deemed as a fold.

When I play chess in yahoo or when I am chatting in the internet, there are s/w that when activated, can cause me to be disconneted from their chat room or the chess table.

I just wonder if I play poker, what should I do to prevent others from sending signals that will disconnect me from that poker tables, thus causing me to lose that round of poker game.
