Christie Vetoes Online Gambling Bill

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a bill that would have made his state the first in the U.S. to re-introduce online gambling. But he also suggested the state Legislature could revive the effort by asking voters to approve the measure by referendum.

The bill would have allowed New Jersey residents to place bets through websites run by casino companies in Atlantic City, the only place gambling is allowed in New Jersey under the state constitution. State legislatures across the country have started work on similar bills in a bid to generate revenue.

In the veto message, Christie said he had a number of “significant concerns” with the legislation. He rejected the theory that by placing servers in Atlantic City, the bill would satisfy constitutional requirements.

“In my view, the creation of a legal fiction deeming all wagers to have ‘originated’ in Atlantic City cannot overcome the clear and unambiguous language of the State Constitution,” he said in the veto.

Voters approved Atlantic City gambling in 1976, two years after rejecting statewide gambling. Christie said he worried the bill would expand gambling “in a manner that is contrary to the public’s sentiment” to gambling.

“The expansion of gambling in New Jersey has been slow and cautious,” he said, noting public concerns about the “potential ills” of betting. A recent poll said 67% of New Jerseyans were opposed to Internet gambling.

Governor expresses concerns about legal and constitutional issues

The New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ended speculation Thursday on the fate of a bill seeking to legalise online gambling when his office announced that he had vetoed the proposal, citing legal and constitutional concerns.

The Governor’s veto means that New Jersey will probably not become the first US state to legalise internet gambling.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) broke the news that the Governor had exercised his right to veto the proposal, which enjoyed significant support in both the State Senate and Assembly and had been sitting on the Governor's desk since January 10th this year.

The Governor’s veto came only hours before the 45-day deadline which would have implemented the bill automatically had the Governor failed to make a decision.

The author of the bill, State Senator Raymond Lesniak, has clearly not given up hope for the proposal, telling WSJ that he was confident the bill could be "tweaked" to meet the Governor’s requirements.

I'm kind of thinking a referendum is heading to N.J, it's not over yet. And it was a conditional Veto which means it could go back to Christie.

No, although there was some initial confusion in the announcement, it was an ABSOLUTE veto, which means that only a two thirds majority vote in both the Assembly and the Senate can overturn it.

The governor's principle justification is that the state Constitution demands that any major expansion in gambling must first be the subject of a referendum.

Apparently that's an option most folks didn't pick up on ...I certainly didn't.

Christie didn't get the money he wanted... thats why he waited right up until a few hours before the bill was to go live without any action on his part before he Vetoed it.

He had his hand out, right till the very end and no one filled it... so he signed the Veto.

If Christie was really concerned about the state Constitution, why wait till the last hour to sign the Veto? Simple he was waiting for someone to meet his price and no one did... Poor gov Christie... No graft money today.
