Parkinson sufferers at risk from web gambling

The British Medical Journal this week warned that those with the degenerative condition Parkinson�s disease face increased risks from online gambling. Parkinson's effects the central nervous system resulting in reduced control of motor function and therefore shaking and general loss of balance. The Journal�s editorial said that many Parkinson's patients experience addictive behaviors such as pathological gambling. The very medication commonly prescribed to help deal with the symptoms of Parkinson�s disease, dopamine agonists, has been linked with an increase in problematic gambling. Last year the Journal Neurology, another British periodical published a study supporting this claim. In the study, the percentage of gambling addiction among Parkinson's sufferers was 3.4 per cent. A second group who had undergone a course of dopamine agonists medication exhibited an addiction rate at 7.2 percent. By comparison the general British population suffers compulsive gambling at the rate of just under one in one hundred people.

I thought online gambling cured Parkinsons, as well as diabeties, gout, high mortgage rates, etc etc....

At first I thought the article was going to state that gambling caused Parkinson's, which would have made me throw my computer out the window. But this seems reasonable, I guess.

Although at least I can thank the UIGEA for protecting me from The Gay!

I know the television show "Vegas" had a plot where they were spikeing players drinks with the medication to keep them gambling. I had one player who lost over 250,000 in 6 weeks that said the medication affected him and he was suing a Las Vegas casino where he lost over 10 million in the same time spreee.
