Big Money in Pittsburgh land gambling

NEW PITTSBURGH CASINOS MAKE GOOD MONEY

With a billion dollars in wagers in the first 90 days, Pennsylvania land gambling is popular

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review quotes official state figures that claim gamblers have wagered more than $1 billion at Pennsylvania casinos in the 90 days since they started opening in November.

Casino patrons bet $1.06 billion and won $960.8 million, the state Gaming Control Board reported.

In all, slots have generated $267.6 million for the state - including the 55 percent tax on gross revenue and licensing fees.

"The revenues from this new industry already significantly exceed the expense thus far for startup costs associated with gaming," gambling board Executive Director Anne LaCour Neeb said in a statement.

The first casino, Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, opened November 14 near Wilkes-Barre. Two have opened since then: Philadelphia Park Casino and Racetrack and Harrah's Chester Casino and Racetrack.

Regulators licensed 11 slots parlours in December. Operators of Presque Isle Downs, near Erie, plan to open the first Western Pennsylvania casino later this month.

The Meadows Racetrack & Casino, in Washington County, is scheduled to open in the spring, and operators have started taking applications for 400 jobs.

An employment centre will open February 26.

And as soon as you drive back home and do this on your computer - you either become a criminal, or you've become guilty of perpetrating criminal activity.

Please note that these are "slots only" parlors. I do believe they are working on getting poker legalized also.

To be honest, I don't even consider these "casinos". No table games, etc.

Transparency, as used in the humanities and in a social context more generally, implies openness, communication, and accountability. It is a metaphorical extension of the meaning a "transparent" object is one that can be seen through. ...

Slots, schslots - it's still gambling - and gambling licensing with selective morality on the part of the state of Pennsylvania.

And it may help revive our dying racing industry in the US.

"Most people said their friends got into racing by attending live races and over 70% are in the 40-60 range. An overwhelming majority preferred live racing for both entertainment and betting."

I know that most everyone on this board is pissed at horse racing right now. Because of their exemption. But I'm kinda glad they awarded the licenses to the racetracks.

The biggest university in the state, Penn State, is taking notice and considering adding more gaming-related courses:

Gaming may let students 'cash in'

The Daily Collegian, March 2, 2007

Penn State officials are currently discussing adding classes to keep up with the Pennsylvania gaming industry, which is planning on providing more than 17,000 new jobs.

"We are in the process of expanding our curriculum to include 15 credits of gaming management in the management of full-service gaming," said Pete Yersin, instructor in Penn State's School of Hospitality Management.

Yersin, who teaches Penn State's only current casino-related course -- Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management 456, casino operations management -- said he would encourage his students to seek out these jobs.
