Swedish Gambling Authority Called Out for Not Being Strict Enough

The era of shady, unlicensed casinos targeting anyone they please will soon come to an end.
That’s what we all thought just a couple of days ago when we read that the Swedish government put someone in charge of reviewing their Gambling Act.
But our initial thrill was short-lived. Turns out, something is rotten in the state of Sweden, and the smell’s coming from the very agency meant to keep the gambling market safe, fair, and legal playing field — the Swedish Gambling Authority (Spelinspektionen).
According to the Swedish National Audit Office’s most recent report, Spelinspektionen didn’t really work hard enough to stop unlicensed gambling sites from targeting Swedish players, nor was it strict enough to punish casinos that broke the rules.
The Swedish government nodded in agreement with this report, pretty much confirming that the SGA has been sitting on its hands so far.
What’s next, now that the cat’s out of the bag, and we all know offshore casinos have been taking Swedish players left and right, while the SGA just sat there watching?
Well, we need to wait till September 2025. That’s when the Swedish government’s supposed to roll out the final draft of the Gambling Act, possibly with some tighter regulations.
Until then, play smart, Sweden — you may be on your own safety-wise.
