Proposals similar to existing tobacco law
Spanish lawmakers have reportedly approved a measure within the 2019 National Budget that will severely restrict, if not ban outright, gambling advertising.
Spain’s Prime Minister, socialist party leader Pedro Sánchez, and Pablo Iglesias, secretary-general of the leftwing Spanish political party Podemos, agreed and signed off the 2019 budget document late last week which reportedly includes proposals on restricting gambling advertising to the same level as existing advertising restrictions on tobacco.
Tobacco advertising is banned across most forms of direct and indirect advertising in the country.
The measure still has some way to go, requiring backing from Catalan separatist parties and negotiation with European Union parties due to a proposed increase in spending.
Stringent regulations will prove a blow to the media industry in which it is reported gambling operators spent Euro 143 million in 2017.
