Punter Scoops £18k on Archie

A very lucky lady who decided to remain anonymous scooped a cool £18,000 on the new addition to the British Royal Family being named Archie, after placing a £120 bet at 150/1 that Archie would be the chosen name for the baby boy.

According to Mail Online which cites bookmakers.tv, the woman received £18,120 inclusive of her stake as she backed the name Archie in recognition of her grandson Archie, who was born on the same day as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son.

The woman in question is quoted on her win, stating: “The reason I went for Archie was because my grandson, who is born on the same day as the prince, is named Archie. So I thought I’d go for a cheeky bet as perhaps my Archie would bring some luck. Here I am, £18,000 richer. The money though, I’m going to put aside for my grandson.”

The name ‘Archie’ was a long shot with bookmakers, with most having the name priced at 100/1, whilst the anonymous winner was able to get 150/1 on her bet. Indeed a spokesperson for Ladbrokes said only £100 worth of bets were laid on the name Archie. While their sister company Coral said the name only produced a handful of bets.

A representative from Coral speaking about the interest in the royal baby’s name said: “We only took a handful of bets on Archie so this has to go down as one of the biggest surprises in royal betting history, as it was a 100/1 outsider before the name was revealed.”

Buckingham Palace released a statement confirming the full name, which read: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted to announce that they have named their son Archie Harrison. The baby will be known as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.”
