Amendments will most likely focus on better advertising and promotion controls
Kenya's booming sports betting sector could be facing stiffer government controls, especially regarding marketing, advertising and promotions, according to local media reports revealing that parliament is studying potential amendments to the Betting, Lotteries & Gaming Act.
It is likely that the changes will include much stiffer penalties for non-compliant operators.
Tough amendments – including a ban on marketing through national media – were introduced to parliament recently by MP Jakoyo Midiwo. Whilst such a drastic move is thought unlikely to be approved, he has also suggested that the Kenya Betting Control Board be given wider oversight powers, and that may find more favour.
