The Swedish Government Aims to Wipe Out Gambling on Credit

By Natasa Milojevic, Last updated Jun 20, 2025

The Swedish government is about to put the foot down on credit card gambling, and this could happen sooner than you may expect.

Initially, they prohibited licensed gambling companies from offering credit to players, but this legislation didn’t really keep people from gambling with borrowed money (such as with credit cards). As you can imagine, this was nothing but a slippery slope to problem gambling and indebtedness.

For that very reason, the Swedish government proposed legislation that would essentially ban using any type of credit for gambling and prohibit operators from letting players play if there’s even a suspicion that they’re using credit cards

If everything goes as expected, the ban could come into effect somewhere in April 2026. Until then, what’s been already passed is still in play, so try gambling with a cool head.
