Danish Gambling Eased In Third Quarter

Sports betting and online poker revenue both down compared to last year

Danish regulator Spillemyndigheden's latest Q3-2016 figures released Wednesday show a disappointing quarterly decline compared to the same period last year, mainly due to weaker sports betting and poker results.
Highlights of the report include:
* Betting and online gaming revenue up year-on-year at DKK 910 million (Q3-2015: DKK 890) but down DKK 25 million on the preceding quarter;
* Taking the betting vertical alone, GGR at DKK 520 million was DKK 40 million lower than the corresponding period last year and lower than the preceding quarter – the first time since 2012 that such a decline has occurred;
* Online betting GGR in the third quarter was DKK 335 million (Q3-2015: DKK 290 million) and online casino and poker was DKK 390 million vs. DKK 330 million. Gambling machines (slots) remained the most important online casino game and measured by GGR its market share of the total online casino GGR increased from 68 percent in Q1 and Q2 this year to 70 percent in Q3-2016;
* Online poker GGR declined DKK 5 million to its weakest level since 2012 at DKK 35 million in Q3;
* Land-based betting showed little if any improvement at DKK 185;
* GGR for land based casinos increased to DKK 95 million in Q3-2016… about equal to the same quarter in 2015;
* GGR average per person above 18 years was 1,870 in 2015, and the regulator estimates that by end 2016 this will have risen to 1,940.
