Borgata Atlantic City To Offer Skill Tournament Action

Basketball the first in a new entertainment series

The skill vs. chance debate around what constitutes gambling will be in many industry observers' minds following the news that the Borgata at Atlantic City is to launch a new skill-based tournament to entertain its punters.

The Associated Press news agency reports that Borgata management has been given a green light by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement to host the first example of the new genre – a basketball tournament in which players are invited to buy-in for $20 in 90-second rounds in which players shoot baskets for free in order to win prize money from a prize pool built on their buy-ins.

The tourneys will be open to all comers with $20, and the outcome – the top four finishers will split $10,000, with the winner getting $5,000 – will be decided purely on skill at shooting baskets.

The format clearly lends itself to other sports where skill is an essential element for success, and Borgata managers have confirmed that they have other ideas pending the success of this first run, scheduled for next month.
