    Hey guys,

I wanted ask some advice about working and living in Malta.
I have an offer to go and work for a specific casino group and had 2 very good Skype interviews.
The wages seem lower in Malta but I was able to negotiate a very decent pay due to my 15+ years of experience in the field of customer service and my bi-lingual skills.
So I was wondering if someone could tell me what you need to earn per year to have a decent life in Malta.
Currently in Ireland everything is mad expensive so that also reflects the wages over here.

How much would the average rent be for a house.
How much would driving a car cost (petrol / insurance).
Are groceries expensive? Can't be worse than Ireland. :)
How much are the costs for a decent health insurance (This is most likely included in my perks from company)
If I wanted to fly over to friends / family, are flights from and to Malta expensive?

Just a few things I can think about.

I am very seriously thinking about the offer as I am done with all the rain and Ireland in general is not recovering in any way due to an incompetent and corrupt government.

So any people who live and work over there, all advice is kindly appreciated. :)

    It would be in Gzira.

    Thanks!

    Mark.

    Heya mate.

It really depends on what your lifestyle is like really...

Regarding average rent, depends on the area and the place you're looking for.. You can get cheap-ish places for 600 alone and can go all the way up to 4k a month if you go for places like Sliema / St Julians..

Oh and decent wages, um.. the minimum wage here is 16k (yes.. We're that behind).. So anything iGaming companies offer is normally enough to be decent-ish

Driving Car Costs - Petrol is around 1.16 a litre, (should know this, filled my car this morning).. Insurance depends on what car you get :) The less powerful, the cheaper!

Groceries aren't bad - A carton of milk (1ltr) + a loaf of bread shouldn't cost ya more than 2 euro a day, of course if ya think long term and pile up the groceries, expect it to be higher.

Health insurance, can't help there sorry :( But! I know that Atlas insurance, not sure if I can link, have online chat whom you can ask.

Flights are dirt cheap, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and anything else that ends with Air and is low cost pretty much flies to us :)

Regarding "Incompetent and corrupt government", Um. I'm not going to comment on the situation here in Malta for your own benefit.

My sources regarding this matter? Hmm, that's a hard one. Myself, the 21 year old Risk and Payment Analyst :D Regarding places to rent, can't really help.. Maltese custom says us young un's live with the parents hehe!

Edit : Added Decent Wage Answer

I’d go but not as a CS - wouldnt you rather pick up some more transferable skills/qualifications in Ireland then make the move. Being skint at home is one thing, being skint abroad is another matter entirely (I’ve done both).

Hehe I have enough other qualities to offer.
Working as a fraud / risk specialist now which also will come in handy in this industry.
It was just a certain job that came up with also a very interesting relocation package so it is defo worth thinking about.

And I am Dutch, so even being skint in Ireland is crap. :p:thumbsup:

There are schools there too, and your girls are never alone. That's the good part with having twins :)
The weather down there are almost always nice but a bit too hot in the summer.

I'm sure there are people who will respond tomorrow also but there are Facebook groups where they are really nice in helping you, and it's a great way of making contacts before you move. Maybe a good way and easier to convince your wife also, than from people in a gambling forum :)

Yes, everything's relative. Ireland has dismal weather, very true. It's when I hear this stuff I stop moaning about the UK - in the south and East of England the weather is relatively dry (believe it or not!) and the average wage is about 28k (33-34k euros) and a litre of milk and loaf of bread costs about 90p in most supermarkets, about 1 euro. Petrol is about the same as the Maltese price and although mortgage costs are quite low due to low interest rates, rents can be high in desirable places.

I can understand you're keen to do your homework here and it's a big jump to move abroad again. You'll have better weather for sure, but you're a 3-hour flight from many places in Europe you may need to visit regularly. The infrastructure may not be what you'd see in the UK or even Ireland, the unshaven fat bloke in the dirty white tropical suit with cigar ash rolling down the front (who usually sells Curacao e-gaming licenses) may well be more of a feature in Malta than what you're used to, despite the systems generally being created by their old rulers Britain.

I hope that some of the reps chip in here as many casino groups, for tax reasons, are based in Malta as we all know so they may be able to offer you a better insight. Most schools will teach in English which you and your family are fluent with. What do the kids think??

    Ehm yes defo.. :)
If my wife does not want to do it, so be it but we are talking about it..
As she has a job here too and all her friends and family..

I am here now nearly 8 years and I have seen this place..
Besides the crappy weather there is absolutely nothing to do for kids and all most Irish people do in general is spend their time in pubs getting drunk..And I don't mean that in a bad way because I love the Irish and that is just their way of living in some way.
I can understand because life here can be pretty depressing..
To be a bit more open I have the feeling that I am starting suffering some kind of depression..The last 12 months I have a feeling I am changing, mood swings, not want to go to work in the mornings (and I love to work), feeling sad, stuff like that.
It scares me a bit as I am a very positive minded person, always have been.

This is a new challenge in a brand new place and might make a difference.
Been in Malta twice for short breaks and I liked it (this was 10 years ago though) ^^

So I am just giving this a serious thought.

    Appreciate all your feedback guys!

You only live once, nobody says you can't go back if it doesn't work out, life and cultural experiences for you children as well, quite frankly with better weather you will probably do more outdoor stuff together.

I think it would be amazing. If I could turn back time and take opportunities that were thrown my way.....I would of! I cant pretend that I know how you raise your family, but wouldn't that be a great learning experience for your daughters. They can learn a new language, see how cultures vary. See things that most kids don't get to. If it's a safe environment. Then YES!

Unless you want your kids to hate you for scaring their minds for life, please don't teach them Maltese..

Even us Maltese have to take private lessons to pass the damn exams for it, let alone foreigners
