This really sucks for those of us who are "out of country" and have no way to watch the fifth season. Anyone know where to stream this in Europe?

Right now everything I can find for streaming seems to be either broken or loaded with viruses. But theoretically the series will be broadcast on Fox International channels if you get any of those? xxhttp://foxinternationalchannels.com/shows/the-walking-dead

I don't know if they're PPV or just regular channels.

Do not know how this will go in Germany as not sure what type of tv channels you get there.

But I am guessing maybe its like the UK where you get satellite tv with all the channels.

If so in UK Fox on virgin media and sky is showing the 1st episode of series 5 tonight at 9pm UK time.

It's on FOX (or FX) worldwide the day after US. Which means today

The quality of my life is about to be improved, life is not the same without TWD, Banshee and Game of Thrones.

Btw Bryan, sometimes when I forget to record, I would just download it. I pay awful money for the cable, so I guess it's alright.

...or watch it on RTL2 next year. No seriously, they are just going to start last season, same as Irish TV.

AMC has it :D They used to require you to sign in with your Time Warner/Cox Cable, etc. account. But no more.

Used a VPN (gasp!) and streamed the whole ad-laden episode. :D

The problem with streaming from any of the major networks in Germany is that you get the localized version - Germans are too lazy to read subtitles - everything is dubbed. Needless to say, Netflix has improved our life here immensely. It launched just a few weeks ago and our US account works there fine, or I can use a VPN (gasp!) and log into the US Netflix version - much more to choose from. I love Netflix.

Saw this topic in here and decided to give it a bump because I really love this show. Just wanted to see what you guys all think of the season so far? I'm loving the first four episodes. Even the "slower" fourth episode had me intrigued. Interesting to come across yet another group and watching how the dynamics of that group have played out so far.

There you prove a point. Be damn sure to switch it off after streaming and certainly before you play any slots:)

It's this jerking around by the big networks that has pushed VPN into the domestic arena. It's why it's plausible that players are accidentally getting caught out at casinos when they use the same PC for their content streaming as they do for their other leisure activities, and forget that there are occasions where they have to switch back to a regular connection from a VPN or proxy for streaming.

You have also disproved a statement that was made that "there is no legitimate reason for a domestic user to be using a VPN".

I am just as surprised that AMC have removed a safeguard they once had that made life harder for those outside the US, and thus allowed VPN to work again on their streaming site.

When I first heard of proxies and VPNs, it was to do with accessing the big US content portals, nothing to do with tricking casinos. VPNs were also heavily promoted for torrenting once we had those headline cases where people were being back traced via their internet connections to their physical address, and being asked for stupid amounts of money to make the "problem go away".

Many people use torrenting because streaming just doesn't work properly due to constant buffering etc. The ISPs and content providers just blame each other for the problems, yet the simplest solution of all would be to let the user download the whole episode at the speed his service can manage, and then watch it locally at the speed his PC can read and decode the local file, which is fast enough on any modern PC such that there are no buffering issues. Only the BBC has conceded the point with it's iPlayer, which can download to a local folder for stutter free streaming.

My niece also tells me that there is a browser extension that can "set her internet" to be able to stream these series direct from the US sites. She has no trouble watching the walking dead. This doesn't sound like a VPN, but it seems to have the same effect, but without having to subscribe to a VPN service.

I'm really liking it too, which is surprising. Most tv series lose my interest by the second season, but this one has kept me. It's nice that it hasn't just turned into a soap opera with zombies.

Walking Dead is one of the few shows I still haven't checked yet, will do soon I suppose, but as to where in Germany you can watch all the shows you are missing, I found that there are a few sites that stream English series, in original language..
It's just a bit of a hassle, as those sites sometimes have certain episodes missing, and only have limited series.

And downloading is totally out of the question here, even with a VPN:) there are a few shady lawyers that have offices strictly concentrating on sending mails to people they have found using downloadprogs, services and that seem to have a larger then average data traffic...

The fines can be up to 4K for one measly mp3.. so if you are going there, with your laptop or phone, that happens to have a uTorrent like program, which tend to put themselves in the startup section after install, and automatically start running after you power it on, you could be in for a nasty surprise, or even worse, your host could get fined for your unintentional downloads, be warned!

So, these shady lawyers can peer though a VPN with enough reliability to mount a court case against an individual?

Has anyone called their bluff on this and been successfully taken to court who has used a VPN to obscure their location?

In the UK, they have gone for blocking specific sites via a court order, but they dropped the idea of restricting or cutting off the internet services to anyone caught downloading.

Even if the German lawyers have won for now, it just means another escalation of the arms race such that something newer than torrenting via VPN takes over. Torrenting itself took over from traditional P2P once the attacks were directed at their key nodes, which when taken down meant that the P2P software had no directory to refer to and thus couldn't connect. Even with torrents it's the magnet link that has taken over from the more traditional torrent file. The weak point is that there is still the need for a search service like Pirate bay, and so by blocking these sites the UK believes it can significantly reduce the extent of downloading by ensuring that the average user can't get it to work.

If the need for an external directory is removed, and searching can take place within the torrent client, then site blocking will no longer be effective.

There already have been cases where the people refused to pay, and that is when the fines exponentially increase, not only did I read a few articles and heard from some people directly involved in such a case, I even saw a few "dramatized" televised scenarios, based on real cases here..

I am not sure If people that know what they're doing with VPN's and anonymous browsing, have also been in such cases, but I am quite sure most I-net providers here are monitored by instances that are flagging any kind of p2p downloading, not sure exactly how it works, but I just said it for the people that come in with their phones, laptops and tablets, that would stay at friends places, to make sure they deactivate any downloading programs before they set their foot on German soil:)

Do they have to prove that what was downloaded was illegal?

There are many legitimate things that get downloaded such as software updates, and of course some legal media files. Surely they would have to identify what was downloaded in order to claim that it was illegal to have done so.

What about public WiFi? If they are going after the host, surely this would make operating a public WiFi spot far too risky for any business to contemplate.

There was a TV documentary here that showed one such monitoring setup. Essentially, they were using the same torrenting clients as everyone else, but they were looking for the IP addresses that were uploading content classed as illegal, and then getting the ISPs to identify who had said IP address at that time, then they sent the letters to the account holder. This would not work with a VPN because the IP address logged would belong to a VPN provider, not an individual host account.

There have also been some PR disasters when they have pursued vulnerable people to the limit, yet let the bigger fish off the hook completely. This has created public resentment towards some companies for their merciless persecution of some young kid, and when the PR storm hits it creates a backlash that can lead to a boycott of their content. They then try to wriggle out of it by saying "it wasn't us, it was a third party, and if we knew the circumstances we would never have pursued this particular case". It's perhaps why sentiment has grown cold over making examples of small time individuals, and has moved to prevention of the problem by going after the websites that make it so easy. In the UK it's now a case of a new infringing website being discovered, and a fast track court procedure to get it blocked more or less automatically.

Yes, that is true, but they don't go after anything other then fragments of, or complete MP.3's or other music files, video and I believe even
E-books are in the list, and I believe the identification/flagging has to do with some sort if identification of said files.

Like I said, I don't know the specifics, but if you are interested, you could look it up, I just decided to warn fellow travellers and friends to make sure to watch it, and take the simple precautionary step to shut off all download programs manually.:)

I just did a quick Google and here is an interesting article for you, that does touch upon some of what we just discussed:

Outdated URL (Invalid)

It's a bit older, but still relevant.

It's nothing special it seems, just that there are far more German law firms prepared to run the shake down schemes for profit than in other places. The laws are the same, it's that in Germany you are more likely to get caught because the firms are much more active in tracing and shaking down the incidents. It could even happen here, there is nothing to prevent lawyers taking civil action against infringers, but the danger is that it could bring the law firms themselves into disrepute if they are seen to be behaving this way, and thus tarnish the whole profession. I think here they only go after the bigger fish who are making fortunes from it. Often it's people who set up copying shops to produce thousands of fake DVDs that are then sold a boot sales that get targeted by the police, and possibly then sued for recovery of the money they have made. I also think that our ISPs are less likely to just hand over the details of customers without first having been provided with solid evidence that there has been illegal activity. They have already stated that they will only block new sites if they get a court order, they will not simply block a list of new sites that the media industry has sent them. Small ISPs are not even obliged to obey these orders, as they name the specific ISPs that are required to act, as well as the sites that must be blocked.

The article also says that the music industry is keen not to let these law firms get too greedy and ask for ridiculous levels of damage as it could result in a public backlash. This happened in the states when they awarded multi million dollar damages against a grandmother, then a child. It was clear that only a tiny fraction of the money awarded would ever be recovered, but the unrealistic figures quoted created the PR storm.

The €150 to €300 level that seems to be applied in Germany is more realistic, and less likely to create a PR storm. The problem is that it seems they are going after people who are not guilty, and this is where this little scheme could come undone. Someone is bound to challenge the legality of not having to show that the person fined did the deed, or even had anything to do with it. If it results in a ruling that states that they must chase the person who did it, the whole shakedown scheme will fall apart because the necessary investigation would become far to expensive.

It seems they ARE going after public WiFi services, and this is being challenged. Even a secure public WiFi is pretty much open to the public, even though they have to get the login details from the business owner. It would still be impossible for such a business to monitor what each customer was doing throughout the day in order to steer clear of the fines. It might even be illegal for a business to even try to monitor customers with this level of detail under privacy and data protection laws.

*SPOILERS ALERT*

What did you guys think of this week's episode?

I really wanted them to just mow into that herd of thousands of zombies at the end in a sort of Thelma and Louise last hurrah but obviously don't want the majority of those characters to die!

I've read up to a point in the comics so I was aware of Eugene's storyline. Wish they'd drawn it out a bit longer. I get the impression they're rushing through things just to introduce Negan before the end of this season.

SPOILER ALERT!!

DON'T READ UNLESS YOU ARE COMPLETELY CAUGHT UP WITH THE FIFTH SEASON!!!

WTF!? I'm so pissed at the mid-season finale. Why Beth?? What sense did it make that she didn't embrace her crew when she was rescued and exited the building expediently. And what's with this totaly annoying preacher?? I was hoping he was next. Eugene is just as annoying as well as most everyone at this point.

Actually one of the things I really like about this show is that the main characters aren't untouchable. Like if you watch almost any movie made in Hollywood you know bloody well who's going to survive, and it's usually the characters played by the actors who have their names on the poster. lol or the Star Trek syndrome, where if anyone gets killed it's some red shirt guy who we may have never even seen before and don't know the name of. But never anyone from the normal cast.

When I first started watching, I didn't expect that I'd still like it after the second season (that's usually how long it takes to bore me) but they've hooked me, and one of the things that keeps me watching is that it's really refreshing to see that the Walking Dead isn't so formulaic. Plus they're sticking pretty close to the comic from the way I understand it - so it isn't just some grossout gorefest, there's an actual plot and subplots and you get a lot more emotionally invested in the characters than expected from a series, especially one with zombies.

...so it isn't just some grossout gorefest...
But I have to hand it to the writers, they have become quite creative with the gorefest. How about when Daryl was fighting that cop in the last episode, and reached over to grab a corpse by the eye sockets and beat the cop upside the head with the detached skull? Brilliant! I wish I was a fly on the wall in the writers' room when they came up with that one. :p

lol - yeah forgot about that part, lucky he didn't grab it by the jawbone because it was still chomping away....

One thing that I find a little unrealistic is that nobody seems really bothered by the smell. I mean maybe by now everyone's pretty used to the stench of death, but even at the beginning of the series it was hardly remarked on. If you've ever smelled that smell, you know what I'm talking about.

You've smelled that smell? Who have you murdered and left to decompose lately? Hahaha.

I love The Walking Dead. I've read ahead with the comics just to see what direction they take it in but there's only one main character that I know that dies later on but that's purely because it's been talked about enough on podcasts etc. I can't wait for the character Negan to come into it. I think the show has lacked a top bad guy since The Governor. Arguably the most complex bad guy in television history!

Bring on the second half of season 5.
