Hi all,

Wondered if anyone can give advice. An online regulated casino has requested my p60 to “ensure that my gambling is affordable”. I sent this through but redacted my employer details as I don’t see how this is relevant to their checks. I gave them a high level indication of what I do over the phone but did not confirm my employer name.

They have come back and said this is not acceptable and want a unredacted version.

I am loathed to provide this and not sure how to proceed as I really don’t want to give out details of my employer.

Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated.

ps. What are the rules on what they can do with this information? Would they be allowed to contact my employer?

Unfortunately their isn’t much than can be done they ask you don’t give equals stalemate seems to be the general consensus these days accredited here? Open pab?

Is a P60 even the most reliable document for assessing affordability in the first place?

Yes, your P60 does say how much you earned in taxable income across the entire tax year.
But it doesn't breakdown WHEN you earned it.

What if your job is one where your earnings can vary greatly?
And what about the fact that we are still in the middle of a global pandemic, with loads of people only now beginning to return to work after a spell on furlough?
In fact, some people may be returning to work having NOT had the benefit of being on furlough.

A P60 isn't able to tell you any of that.

I would have thought that recent payslips or a recent bank statement would give a much better indication
of what funds you have available to you right now.
But obviously, many players would (quite rightly) be wary of providing such information.

I think it would be helpful if the OP could say if they are having to provide this in order to get a withdrawal processed or if they have any funds tied up in their account at said casino eg made a deposit, but has been blocked from commencing play on that deposit, pending the SOF check.

If it is the case that there are currently no funds in their casino account, perhaps the best step would
be to just not bother providing that info, leave the account in limbo and play somewhere else?

Yes, we've entered 'Urine-Extraction' territory now, and casinos show no sign of reining it in. Next logical (and completely understandable) step is that they perhaps ask for relatives' P60s (or P40s, should their luck have deserted them), followed - naturally- by historical P60s. Culminating in the creme de la creme, the holy of holiesL

Your employer's P60!

Throw in some dental records and Bob's your uncle: you are now a fully-fledged player and have earned the right to fucking play slots!!!!!!

Of course, we could all see it was headed this way, there is nothing that 3 consecutive payslips can't prove, that is, unless one happens to provide those months missing 'the funneling of crime proceeds' and various terrorist-related sponsoring. Historically I've always cunningly duped people this way, so I can see why they'd need to see the entirety of my year's earnings, minus my shady cash-in-hand work on the side of course.

So yes, a massive Gold Star for the casino in their thorough approach. 12/10

This is more total BS from online casino's. Sorry but I have gambled most of my life, but to the main in arcades and bookies, with only the occasional foray into online gambling.

As the business stands at the moment I would rather give myself several nasty cuts and swim in Pirahna infested waters than put money into an online casino. If I take out a bank loan for £10,000 I have to provide my last 3 pay statements and a list of outgoings...... and that is for them to give me money.

To get the money the casino OWES you they require bank statements, pay slips, employer details, a copy of your passport/driving licence and in some cases a selfie. But without all of the above they will still accept deposits

Sod the lot of them.

Betcha it gets worse,I have 3 casino accounts , ok with SOW status on all at the moment but they will end up demanding more stuff, when they do its immediate account closure and when they have all gone thats
me done after 20 years online gambling.
Why did they have go blundering into something they know nothing about with ridiculous regulations, they
will kill it all off
Saw something I didnt realise on TV the other day, all UK lotteries require you to be 18+ to play except
the National Lottery where its 16, responsible gaming my arse, start them off young when it suits you

What about that £10 national lottery win that went into your bank account - that looks suspiciously like money laundering to me - we will require a signed affadavit from Camelot confirming that it is income (although it could also provide evidence of out of control gambling :)

you better find another hobby,

You better find another fucking hobby,If you have avoided SOW so far its a miracle.
Oh I have plenty, worry yourself not

And no I haven't encountered SoW, because I tend to avoid Maltese clipjoints (of which there are many)

I have perfected quite the winning strategy in regards to casinos' meddling, namely, first casino that asks for proof of SoW gets fucking insta-closed
I did that with Guts, a real shame as they have a few of my fav machines too. But I will never provide SOW to a casino as long as I live and strongly advise that no one does.

The maltese inquisition are definatley the worst but had my fair share of trouble with UK casinos although
they just prevented deposits, didnt hold funds to ransom

Same here. I use 3 too now. Down from 15-20. A mortgage/loan/car credit company can see my bank statements but there's just something very wrong giving them to a casino.

Apparently, lotto and it's scratch cards isn't gambling, so it's ok for the kids to play

thank god that its not gambling, wouldnt like to imagine a kid winning £20 on a scratchy then popping across the road to the bookies for the first time, welcome to the house of fun.

Clearly all these forms of gambling are linked and equally destructive, just that regulatory bodies put some on a higher pedestal than others

It's easy to dismiss scratchcards, the National Lottery as harmless fun, but it can turn the most ardent non-gamblers into addicted gamblers quite easily. If anything, it just serves to desensitize youngsters to gambling, and is often overlooked

Totally agree with the Goatman, I buy a £5 scratchcard when I get my shopping, sometimes I win, but normally my money back, most times I lose. If I do that 10 or 20 times a month I have lost a £100, over a year that's £1200 theoretically, but because it is government supported no one cares. If I go in and ask for 40 scratchcards no one will ask a question about whether I can afford it.

It's still gambling, and it's in every supermarket, newsagent with in your face advertising to all and sundry. There is also no method of blocking yourself from buying scratchcards if you have a problem. It's only recently that they stopped selling £10 scratchers.

I had £3 cashback from the National Lottery, due to Covid19 etc.Does that constitute as money laundering???
I have to agree with some of the players here, in regard to SOW..the Sod 'O' word is a definite reply.

Looks like that won't be an issue any more now that they are looking to raise the scratchcard age limit to 18. Interestingly though if you live in a sea side town there is nothing to stop you going in and blowing £30 of your pocket money on slot machines in there. Time to restrict those as well as they are merely inducing school children to gamble.

I am not anti gambling, I am anti-children gambling in any shape or manner.
