UN warns of Afghan opium cultivation

    Thu, 07 Feb 2008 15:12:54

UN says Afghanistan produces another enormous opium poppy crop this year and the world should brace itself for the expected influx of heroin.

Afghanistan is the world's biggest opium producer and provides 90 percent of the world's supply of the drug, a survey by the United Nations revealed.

The survey, which was conducted by the UN Office on Drug and Crimes (UNODC) through field interviews and surveys, found that the production of opium, from which heroin is derived, will slightly drop from last year's record harvest of 192,000 hectares, a statement by the UNODC said in Kabul.

The United Nations also said there was a strong link between instability and opium production. In the south and west, where security is worst, 100 percent of studied villages that had poor security cultivated poppies, the report said. At the same time, poppy cultivation is decreasing in places that have good security, it said.

Most poppy farmers in the south and west of the country said they paid a tax to mullahs, the Taliban, or local officials.

The UN drugs chief urged Afghanistan and its allies to take decisive action to clamp down on the booming drug cultivation and production, which despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars, has still remained uncontrollable.

Now Riddle me this Riddlers, Does it not seem a little F*****G Odd to you guys that we have (The US Armed Forces) have been over in little Ole Afghanistan now for Seven (7) Years and with all of our technology and force and power we cannot wipe out and destroy about 192,000 hectares (474,000 acres) of poppy fields...you've got to be F*****G kidding me !!

Seems to me that if we were really over there to fight the terrorists and try to end their regime that this would definitely be the first place that I would start. You cut out their $Money Crop$ (opium) and you have dealt a crucial blow to the terrorist funding...Right !!

We could wipe out entire forests and villages and mountain sides over in Vietnam 38 years ago using only Napalm and now they want us to believe that 38 years later with all of our advanced technology that we have now, we cannot destroy a few thousand acres of poppy fields...give me a F*****G Break !!

Your joking right? And the govt giving up all of that heroin income?

It's a known fact that alot of our major dealers work for the DEA. I have seen several documentarys on this subject with retired govt ermployees telling stories of how we use that money to fund alot of things. That's why they dont make drugs legal. Our country would be in much better shape if we legalized them and gun deaths would decline Thats MPO and Im sticking to it!!

it's possible to synthesize the psychoactive substances from any of the plants that are used to make drugs, so rendering the opium poppy (or the coca bush or the cannabis sativa plant) extinct will not stop those drugs from being used, just change the manner in which they are produced.

and yes, clearly the government has its hand in the pie. they go everywhere that the money is. bastards!
