I hope this is ok to post here, because when I received this I was very disturbed over this and am hoping others will see this as I did, a betrayal.

I am amazed at how far Obama has gotten in our country..this is one man that should not have even gotten off first base..

I think our country has truly lost it's direction since no one is pointing out the fact that this man turned his back on the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance and refused to place his hand over his heart during the recitation. How can we be so stupid ! I was sent this by another co worker...

In light of the recent appeals court ruling in California, with respect to the Pledge of Allegiance, the following recollection from Senator John McCain is very appropriate:

'The Pledge of Allegiance' - by Senator John McCain
"As you may know, I spent five and one half years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. In the early years of our imprisonment, the NVA kept us in solitary confinement or two or three to a cell. In 1971 the NVA moved us from these conditions of isolation into large rooms with as many as 30 to 40 men to a room.

This was, as you can imagine, a wonderful change and was a direct result of the efforts of millions of Americans on behalf of a few hundred POWs 10,000 miles from home.

One of the men who moved into my room was a young man named Mike Christian.
Mike came from a small town near Selma , Alabama . He didn't wear a pair of shoes until he was 13 years old. At 17, he enlisted in the US Navy. He later earned a commission by going to Officer Training School Then he became a Naval Flight Officer and was shot down and captured in 1967. Mike had a keen and deep appreciation of the opportunities this country and our military provide for people who want to work and want to succeed.

As part of the change in treatment, the Vietnamese allowed some prisoners to receive packages from home. In some of these packages were handkerchiefs, scarves and other items of clothing.

Mike got himself a bamboo needle. Over a period of a couple of months, he created an American flag and sewed on the inside of his shirt.

Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, we would hang Mike's shirt on the wall of the cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

I know the Pledge of Allegiance may not seem the most important part of our day now, but I can assure you that in that stark cell it was indeed the most important and meaningful event.

One day the Vietnamese searched our cell, as they did periodically, and discovered Mike's shirt with the flag sewn inside, and removed it.

That evening they returned, opened the door of the cell, and for the benefit of all of us, beat Mike Christian severely for the next couple of hours. Then, they opened the door of the cell and threw him in. We cleaned him up as well as we could.

The cell in which we lived had a concrete slab in the middle on which we slept Four naked light bulbs hung in each corner of the room.

As I said, we tried to clean up Mike as well as we could. After the excitement died down, I looked in the corner of the room, and sitting there beneath that dim light bulb with a piece of red cloth, another shirt and his bamboo needle, was my friend, Mike Christian. He was sitting there with his eyes almost shut from the beating he had received, making another American flag. He was not making the flag because it made Mike Christian feel better. He was making that flag because he knew how important it was to us to be able to Pledge our allegiance to our flag and country.

So the next time you say the Pledge of Allegiance, you must never forget the sacrifice and courage that thousands of Americans have made to build our nation and promote freedom around the world. You must remember our duty, our honor, and our country."

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisable, with liberty and justice for all."

PASS THIS ON... And on... And on! You can even send it back to me, I don't mind, because its worth reading again.

oh......and then you have this clown, who refuses to place his hand on his heart and say the pledge......

Subject: Remember this picture on election day!
Let's all remember this on election day...if you have family serving in the military, make sure you send it along.
I had heard about this but a picture is definitely worth 1000 words! God save us!!!

Senator Barack Obama, Governor Bill Richardson, Senator Hillary Clinton and Ruth Harkin stand during the national anthem.
Barack Hussein Obama's photo (that's his real name)......the article said he REFUSED TO NOT ONLY PUT HIS HAND ON HIS HEART DURING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, BUT REFUSED TO SAY THE PLEDGE.....how in the hell can a man like this expect to be our next C ommander-in-Chief
blind???

Alll I got to say is, be afraid, be very afraid if this is who you want to lead this country..

See
If this is the only thing they can find on this man, it doesnt bother me. People put so much into things like this. Its just like people saying "he didnt go to church on sundays" I would rather have someone who doesnt say the pledge or doesnt go to church than someone who does and then go home and beat his wife. These type of things are for show in my opinion. You dont have to publicly display your affections for something to show that you believe in God or believe the good for all man kind.

This is the part I hate about the internet. Every day I get these emails with warnings and noone really knows the true story behind these pictures and articles. Anyone could of photoshopped his picture in there OR maybe he didnt say it. Im 46 and still dont know all the words, yet I am not threat to anyone, Im an honest citizen.

Anyone in my opinion that would actually be swayed by ONE picture is not open minded and believes everything they see.

We should also do careful research before voting. There's a jump link on this page which covers the national anthem thing, too.

Will I vote for him? .... I don't like any of them.

for President. LOL Poor guy's been dead for ages....

Hit home...

This photo was truly disturbing in the fact that I took my oath of allegiance when I became a naturalized citizen to heart...and to see someone wanting to become our leader disregard something so close to my heart...I could not explain the immense feeling I felt when I first saw this.

I want to thank Mousey for pointing the way in dispelling this vision and myth up to a point...since it does still say he sometimes forgets to put his hand over his heart when it is time for the Anthem..I cannot imagine "forgetting" this action which should be automatic for any one in the government..because, wherever I am , once I hear this music, no matter where I am, or what I am doing.. my auto response is to stand up and put my hand over MY heart WITHOUT thought...

If this is the only thing they can find on this man, it doesnt bother me. People put so much into things like this
It is enough to question his motives for no one can just "forget" hearing our anthem...now can they?

Bring back George Washington
Not on your life..he loved crossing rivers in the cold... :p

this is the first year that im really torn up about voting, i do not like obama, i think he has not paid his dues yet to have him elected to be a leader of such a great country as ours imo.there are so many people outside the u.s that want to live here that would call it an honor to place their hand over their heart while the pledge or national anthem is being recited. when we see our troops or those that have defended our nation in wars past, including casinmeister, to me this is a slap in the face to each one of those brave fighting men and women. i dont care what nation you are from, you should have pride in self , family, country and to whom you worship to.if you ever have a doubt about what our service men and women do for us, take a walk through a v.a hospital and im sure you will see first hand what its like. i take my 82 year old ww2 vet father every month and its not the older ones there anymore its kids 18, 20 year olds comming home with no limbs, so yes i will always place my hand over my heart with pride and recite right along with the rest of them.....i feel better... venting....

everyone of them has their back to the flag. it is simply behind them. it is perfectly normal to show respect for the allegiance with hands folded in front or behind you. no need to put hand over heart. the same people who pass these kinds of emails around are the same guys who dont remove their baseball caps during the national anthem at sporting events. now that's disrespectful!

I agree 1819. I dont take anything for granted and my husband, dad , uncles and now Nephew served or is serving his country. I just dont feel a person is bad or disrespecting if they dont put their hand on their heart. THese are all just gestures. What a person does in life and how he treats people in life is what counts. Anybody can put their hand on their heart, its what they do and how they act before and afterwards

We have two candidates that are for more social programs which could only be paid for with tax increases and another candidate who appears ready to continue on with the current government agenda. Being an independent, I haven't found any of the three a person I could vote for in good conscience.

Having said that, I do believe the uproar over not having the hand over the heart is due to a misunderstanding of protocol. As a child, in school, we all stood with a hand over the heart and pledged allegiance to the flag.

Although many place their hands over the heart during the playing of the national anthem, a man removing his cap, talking stops and standing in a respectful way was taught to us as the protocol. Not placing a hand over the heart . I automatically place my hand on my chest but notice the majority doesn't at ballgames, etc, wherever the anthem is played. I'm just an old fogey who never took that as a sign of any disrespect :)

You should read the entire story in context, not just the Republican version :D

And if you want to get technical about it - half of the people were holding their hands over their stomachs, and the lady who sang was butchering the "Star Spangled Banner". Perhaps Mr. Obama wasn't sure what he was listening to :D

I have lost about 18 members of my present and past family over that damn red, white and blue flag that means so little to some folks...so yes if ever given the opportunity to stand in front of it...Facing It...whether it be for reason of the National Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance you better bet your ass that I will be staring at it "With My Hand Placed Over My Heart" with PROUD HONOR of all that it stands for and for all of those brave men and women who have gone before and given the greatest gift that anyone could have asked them to give..."Their Life" no less...so YES.... I will be staring in Reverence and Honor with hand over my heart remembering all that it stands for...God Bless This Great Country and Our Flag that represents it !!!

Should see...

I think many of you would be amazed at the sight of all the men and women at the sports book in Dover Delaware whenever a track opens up for the day.

The first thing you see is the monitor coming on and then you hear the start of the national anthem and then you see a sea of bodies rising out of their chairs with hats in hand and hands over hearts for each and every track that opens with the anthem on the television screen...now this is truly a wonderful feeling..and a lot of us old folks that still believe ....

This is the reason I go there and no longer go to Atlantic City to play the horses ...the feeling of being....

Maybe if we had this same feeling in more americans, this country wouldn't be where it is now...instilling something good in kids during my growing up time was one of the best things my parents taught and showed me..respect, honor, faithfulness and love for country and self..

Thanks for all the comments and help in directing me to places I wouldn't know to go..

I don't like to get political but...My parents were WW2 generation and I was raised with such a strong and unshakeable love and respect for this GREAT country that we are so very lucky to be living in! I will always put my hand over my heart. Whether Republican or Democrat or Independent, if you love and respect our Country I will respect you and your opinions.

I think you may be missing my point. I respect our country and my family members who have died or gotten injured. I also put my hand on my heart because Its automatic with me as well. I went to catholic school and the other schools, it was just automatic. I dont do it at home if Im watching tv and the anthem comes on, but If Im in public and its done, I do

I had 2 points to the post

1. You cant believe everything you see and hear on the internet. It is always half the story you hear

2. "If" it were true, that doesnt make him a bad person. We are suppose to separate religion and state. His religious beliefs wont have an impact. Look, Bill Clinton went to church every Sunday and he cheated on his wife. What I am trying to say is that you cannot judge a person by one incident, good or bad. I loved Bill Clinton as president, what he does with his penis is not my concern. I want someone who can run this country, period. Not one of those ppl were even looking at the flag, I really think something was going on in that picture. Thats all Im saying.

People read or see things and run with it without checking out all of the facts.
I really dont want or appreciate ppl thinking I am less american or care less about America because of one guy who didnt have his hand on his heart. This is why I shouldnt even be in here. My father always taught me not to discuss religion or politics in public. Everyone has their own beliefs and I respect that but dont tell me Im disrespectful because I dont feel this picture is accurate.

And if you ask me, ALL politicians are nothing but self serving egotists who want all the glory without all of the work and when something goes wrong they squirm until they can find someone else to blame. Politics is what is holding us down if you think about. Especially us...online gamblers. We should have the right and yet some politician voting against it just to find out he owes thousands in gambling debt?

You know what....let them go fight it out, stop using our relatives and friends to do their dirty work. I dont have a beef with some poor schmuck in Iraq, as far as I know, he could of easily been born here and been my neighbor. Its not anyones fault that he /she was born in a country were fighting.

I know Im rambling but Im really mad now! This post was about one person who was pictured without his hand on his heart and now all of a suddon if we side with him or think theres more to it, Im not a good American or a respectful American, Yet all of you Americans including myself are breaking the law every day when we gamble? Something isnt right and Im not coming back to this thread

in canada it's less indoctrinated to cover one's heart during the anthem, and we don't have any oath to swear. people have every right to sing/recite along, hold their heart, remove their cap, but so does everyone who chooses not to have the same right to not do those things without penalty.

personally, i remove my hat if applicable and remain stationary with hands at sides, listening to the anthem for its duration. i don't sing along or hold my heart, yet i know i am still showing respect for the performance.

for that matter, should there be a minimum number of times to recite the anthem/pledge/prayer to be a proper patriot? maybe five times daily, while kneeling on a rug facing washington? mandate the broadcast on all tv (and internet) channels of the anthem at scheduled intervals?

i just think it's up to the individual how they recognize any of these formalities. and in the specific i don't think obama should have to swear by the words passed down over time. if he does not agree with being under god, or in an indivisable unified nation due to the racial divide, he should not have to recite those words to sate the crowd. should we lynch him for not conforming? he should respect the performance by those uttering the oath, by not making any kind of a scene, but i don't think there's any obligation to follow along with it because everyone else is.

"whattaya mean he don't tip?"

and if i find out there's anyone only observing one minute of silence on remembrance day instead of the amended period of two minutes...

well i had to ask one of the most outspoken people i know for his opinion. my uncle m. he served this country, in the navy aboard the uss ingersoll(dd652), during ww 2. he attends every reunion and wears his ingersoll cap and jacket just about everywhere. he is my dads older brother. my uncle d was also in the war and lost a lung to a japanese bullet. when asked about this uncle m said this..."you're crazy boy! you dont have to put your hand on your chest to show respect! there are some poor boys that i served with dont even have hands anymore! if you are proud of something then you are proud. that's it." then he went into some crazy war tales that he enjoys telling and i enjoy listening to. he survived 11 battles on the ingersoll. although there are, i dont know anyone more patriotic than he. i will accept his word as law.:)

My Dad was career military (29 yrs. U.S. Navy) so I was born into the protocol. Can't say I have ever thought of not having absolute respect for this country. :)
