Notre Dame Fire

Just a news snippet of one of our times' most culturally- significant tragedies :(

Makes one wonder how a PM and country could allow a national treasure to be so passively uninterrupted in its destruction

Yes, having once visited Egypt and seen evidence of how tomb robbers once broke open sarcophagi by lighting fires by them and throwing water on them to crack the stone, I can understand why they had to be very careful where they sprayed water!

The main structural integrity of the two towers is still intact and as the fire seems to have started higher up in the building they could douse the inside down and rescue most of the treasures which seems to have happened.

Hope it's restored to its former glory.

Parliament will be next its a ticking bomb dangerous wiring leaking rooves etc.

I maybe missing something here but a national emergency for a building catching fire?

For a building of such historical importance and value to just catch fire in that way is crazy.
I worked on Cambridge university buildings years ago (scaffolder) we had daily meetings upon how important they where and what precautions to take not to even scratch the brick work or masonary.
The fire protection was insane, 24hr fire watch man, fire blankets and extinguishers within yards of any (hot work permits) going on.
Spark prevention, hourly assessments on hot work...
that was 15 years ago before the health and safety madness to!..
I now work on the oil rigs in the North Sea, never seen one single fire on site, the precautions are crazy and very effective to prevent a fire happening, granted in the kitchens or accommodation it happens, but that’s out in minutes.
Never in a live site where the permit system is so thorough, it’s also a legal document once signed.
I cannot see how a fire of that scale happened so fast, quickly and so devastating.
The response time was terribly slow also.
No mad basement dwelling conspiracy theorist, but it’s pretty unthinkable to say the least.

700 million Euro raised already for a building, but half the world is starving to death or have no clean drinking water..
Makes you wonder..

I mean, sad to see a landmark like this gets burned down but it is only a building on the end of the day..
Good God man, you'll be wheeling out Bob Geldoff & Bono next :p

Quite right and it's not even as badly damaged as they were making out, just because it has been sat there 850 years doesn't mean people need to cry over it.

And yet we in the West spend billions gambling each year....

Yes true, but if I see how little governments do to fight poverty in their own countries it makes me sick.
Look only at Ireland and the UK, shocking how many people are homeless for one or the other reason.
Life is not always about opportunities, you and I might have them but if you are in an unlucky position there will be no opportunities.

I like slotting but I have never ever forgotten about the less fortunate.
Every month I spend a few quid and fill 2 boxes of food at Tesco or ALDI here and give it to the homeless groups that take care of the homeless people.
I donate to local charities and even sponsor the local soup kitchen. ;)

But I would not give a penny for a burnt down building that is I am sure well insured and will cover the costs for rebuilding.
My issue is then, who will get the 700 million...I am sure some people with deep pockets in France are happy to collect and receive.

Hear what your saying, however how many homeless really are?. Many are there through addictions and essentially choice.
You can’t just keep throwing money at problems and hope they go away.

Yeah I mean those silly people, crying over an old building. In fact we don't need any of these old buildings, they should just all be burned! Never mind the cultural and historic impact and symbol the Notre Dame represents.

I think anything past a couple of years should be outlawed as it's irrelevant, then we could have vast open spaces with people walking around in circles checking their smartphones for Instagram notifications. Failing that, we could have the landscape filled with shops and condos

Exactly this.
You beat me to it before my rant

Well i can see your point.

But in Glasgow even tho it is a poor city millions were spent on the Glasgow school of Art after it went on fire. Only for it to burn down again wasting all that money and ruining all the surrounding businesses. And who knows how much it will cost if they rebuild it yet again.

So even tho Sturgeon bleats on about poverty in this country she is more than happy to have so much money wasted on a building just because of its historic value . A lot of money was donated for it that could have helped people more .

Guess countries just feel that as the buildings are so historic and tourist attractions they should be rebuilt.

It's a building for crying out loud you don't need to cry over a building and call a national emergency for the whole country. Most of it is till standing and they made sure they removed the stuff insider first before deciding to save the building so clearly they care about the building so much.

Yes of course, I see it completely differently now

So if the Taj Mahal or Angkor Wat perished I suppose people should just 'get over it and stop crying'

Oh there's just no point is there, yes to some Catholics it will upset them and some Parisians but to other people everyone just got on with their lives it's being overblown and should not still be on the news today it's out the roof will be rebuilt and it will attract more people than ever.

Tell me this if they cared so much about the building why did they decided People, treasures inside, building in that order, they cared so much about the Cathedral it was third on the firefighters list of things to save.

Lol well i would hope they put people first. And the treasures were irreplaceable where as the building could be rebuilt.

The treasures were worth money that's why they got them out first, let the building burn get the goodies out.

Ironically Paris and France will pay bugger all for the restoration the rest of the world will pay for including the stupid billion who gave £300m, you bet your life Macron made sure the priceless treasures are well under wraps now, yes old Macron can't deal with the yellow vests but makes sure he has his hands on the items worth something.

I actually talk to the 2 homeless guys living in the neighborhood.

The both want to live outside but get monthly government money. The homeless shelter sucks they say, if don't get there early you won't get a bed.

Let me add, it is not half the world starving (not sure about the clean drinking water) but its something like 10-12% of the population. Still a big number.
