New Forum Function: Forum Experience

After reading CM's post I checked my points out of curiosity.

Can you elaborate on what these changes mean? Is the below correct? I lost over 20,000. On the other hand I didn't know I had that many to lose. :D

17th November 2011
04:18 PM bb28 has lost -5763 Points for User points
04:18 PM bb28 has lost -14905 Points for Posts points
04:18 PM bb28 has lost -1246 Points for threads points
04:08 PM bb28 has lost -87 Points for User points
04:08 PM bb28 has lost -2 Points for Posts points
03:46 PM bb28 has earned 5 Points for Posts points
03:46 PM bb28 has earned 26 Points for User points
03:46 PM bb28 has earned 2 Points for threads points

Before last night, everyone's points were being computed since the first postings were being made in this forum 13 years ago. I adjusted the computations to include only activity for the past five years, then I did it again for activity made in the past two years. This gives members who are currently active a better chance to be competitive with their points. There are a lot of members who were very active for a number of years, but have since left the forum. It seems pretty lame to award members with activity points when they no longer participate.

To get the gist what the point system is all about, please check out the points' page here:

To see the rankings, check out this page:

You're on the second page at around #48. Which is pretty good considering this computation is including 6170 members (those who have signed up after 1 Nov. 2009).

Soon, we will be organizing the awards and getting some competition going in the forum. Should be some fun.

Elsewhere it has been asked how one gets to see their Experience, etc. I thought I'd offer this little "show and tell":

If you're interested in the forum Experience activity in general have a look at the "Experience" section, accessed via the tabs at the top of any page in the forums:

If you're interested in your personal stuff try this, accessed via the "My Profile" link at the top of any forum page while you are logged in:

Seems there are some "Achievements" you don't really want to achieve. There is one for infractions, and I just got one for overdrive. Sorry, I ran out of money to gamble with today, I had to post at all the threads I've been meaning to say something on.

What the heck is a tag?

Welcome to the overdrive club :)

What the heck is a tag?

Tag is a blogging term, like if you're posting about a tournament at ClubWorld you could add the tags ClubWorld and Tournaments, or if you're writing a recipe for Thanksgiving you can put the tags Turkey, Recipe, Pie etc. it gives people easier things to search for or to help find related stuff.

There used to be a field under the post field where you could put tags but I don't see it anymore....?

Scroll further down. It's under "Related Posts" you'll see them :p

Tagging is an excellent tool to enhance everyone's search capabilities in the forum. If there is a certain topic that comes up, and you want this to be available for future reference, create a tag (if your permissions allow you to do so).

Here we have Chayton who is lost. She can't find the Tags and I have told her where to find them "Scroll down..." So I have added a tag to this thread for future reference.

Now I can go to the Tag Cloud, and there it is (I have to search). I can find it whenever I want to refer to this thread. :D

Cool eh?

Ok so the tags are for the whole thread, not just the post, right?

Yeah, think so. I've thought it would be nice to be able to tag individual posts ... but maybe that would be a nightmare for the forum server.

Ahhh THANKYOU jasminebed and chayton!!!!! My question about tagging has finally been answered LOL Patience is rewarded :D

If you get one of those superlong 80 page threads that go all over the place to crazytown and back, but someone posts some good info on something in the middle, even if it's tagged like that you won't be able to find that post without slogging through the whole thing, right? heh - actually if it's in the middle you'd only have to slog halfway, but still.

oh well, it's not like I have anything better to do.

Right, as things currently stand. Which is why I said it would be good to be able to tag individual posts.

Actually I've been working on something that effectively does the per-post tagging but it's still in the trial stages so not ready for real time yet.

tags and rewards for posting a lot

i think this thread is relavent enough for me to post here instead of starting my own.

regarding tags, i wish there was a list of tags. i created a new thread and put some tags on it and i got a message saying i'm not allowed to create new tags.

as to experience points and such, i think it would be best if the number of posts a person makes doesn't affect a person's status very much, and the quality of one's posts affects it more.

sometimes i read very long threads and come out not having learned much because many of the posts are just people saying 'yeah i agree' or arguing back and forth with the same points.

i have to have made 10 posts to be able to thank a user for a post. i could just go and find a few threads to post in without really contributing to the thread just so i can have that ability.

i really like the thank a user feature - it decreases the amount of posts in a thread that are just agreement posts and rewards people for valuable posts.

Interesting you should mention quality vs quantity, given that you just finished posting exactly 10 times in an hour to enable tagging in your posts

What's the big deal about putting tags in your posts anyway? Hardly anyone does it, so I hope you're not intending to start any stealth advertising or linking as you won't find the moderators very forgiving.

Forgive me if I have it all wrong, but its not the way the newbs usually behave.

yeah i didn't want to wait - i wanted the thank a user feature because i've wanted to use it many times after reading helpful posts on here.

and i wanted to use the tags "positive expected value" "negative house edge" "positive player edge" "+EV" on the thread i made in the online casinos subforum

: )

I figured as much.

It's a shame you couldn't do what every other newb does (I.e.the polite thing) and just join in threads which interest you and post legitimate contributions.

I still don't get why you're desperate to tag...??

This is something that is worth considering, we all came here with 0, just like you.

Some things have been revamped and changed since I've been here, but I like the system that CM uses for the most part because the system takes into account many different factors.

Also I don't understand the big deal about tagging, most don't do it. I will occasionally when bored. :)

29th December 2011
08:30 AM binshakindown has lost -59 Points for Posts points
08:30 AM binshakindown has earned 6 Points for User points
08:30 AM binshakindown has earned 1 Points for threads points

So was a new time period change made again in December, or was I just a bad poster.:D

How come there are no points for snipping off a sarcastic or silly response because you're never really paying attention to what the actual thread subject is?
