MGM Resorts Drops Casino Plans for Brimfield,Mass.
MGM Resorts International said Tuesday it is dropping plans to join with a western Massachusetts developer on a 150-acre casino proposed for Brimfield, Mass., just north of the Connecticut border.
But MGM said it has not abandoned its interest in the area and will continue to look for another site.
"The unique nature of MGM's plans for an all-inclusive world-class resort on the Brimfield site, and our growing understanding of the needed scope for the infrastructure, simply do not allow us to pursure the comprehensive MGM resort originally envisioned here," said Bill Hornbuckle, MGM's chief marketing officer.
Massachusetts lawmakers approved legislation in November legalizing casino gambling. The bill allows the establishment of a single slot parlor anywhere in the state, and three full-scale casinos — one each in the Boston area and the southeastern and western portions of the state.
The Mohegan Tribe, which operates Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, has proposed building a casino in Palmer, Mass., just west of Brimfield. MGM Resorts and Mohegan would compete for the western Massachusetts license.
Hard Rock International, the owner of the Hard Rock Café, announced in November that it was teaming with Paper City Development LLC to develop and operate a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Holyoke.
MGM Resorts has a licensing agreement with the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket to run the MGM Grand Hotel.
Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods draw up to one-third of their customers from Massachusetts, according to the Center for Policy Analysis at the University of Massachusetts.
