Man who stabbed UConn student Jasper Howard sentenced for manslaughter

John Lomax III was sentenced to 18 years for the stabbing death of UConn student Jasper "Jazz" Howard in a fight on campus in 2009. Police photo
John W. Lomax III, 22, originally charged with murder in the 2009 stabbing death of UConn student and football player Jasper Howard, pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter in January. Today, in Rockville Superior Court, he was sentenced to a term of 18 years.
A plea of no contest, or “nolo contendere,” means a person does not admit guilt but also does not challenge the charges. Typically, the plea cannot be used against a person in related civil cases.
At his sentencing today, Lomax sobbed and apologized to Howard’s family.
Rockville Superior Court Judge Terence Sullivan noted that Lomax, of Bloomfield, had no previous criminal record, holds down a job and provides for his child. But he added that Lomax had robbed Howard and his family of these things, as well as his future as an athlete.

Howard’s girlfriend was pregnant when he was killed and so he never saw his daughter.
