The History Channel had a show on last night about the history of gambling in America, and of course talked about the following:

The spread of gambling was not without its opponents, however. In 1835, outraged citizens of Vicksburg hanged five faro dealers perceived as promoting immorality.

So, I guess it could be worse than it is now!
