Funnily enough I was out with a few people for beers and myself & another were actually shocked (and a tad angry)that the others HADN'T heard of it :p

Whether that speaks volumes for our character and/or depravity is another thing

I am also shocked about all the Words that are Inside the List from Dunover he cant be serious :D:p:p:laugh:

Hey if anyone wants to call me a Kraut Limey Terrorist, knock yourselves out. I promise I won't be offended! :eek2::laugh:
but there's untold goat jokes at our disposal :p

Japs wasn't what the UK soldiers tended to call them, but 'Nips' (as in Nippon). Speaking ill of the enemy is all part of warfare, the motivation of personnel by demonizing and ridiculing the other combatants.

What gets me is that MOST terms for nationalities were never originally offensive, but truncated words that roll off the English speaker's tongue more easily OR a reference to those people's national traditions.

So 'Pakis' was once considered normal, a short word, it was in TV comedies etc. and is now considered legally offensive. And as with the example above about rappers calling each other 'Nigga', in the UK when Pakistan play cricket matches here, their fans chant 'Paki power' much to the bemusement of the England fans to whom the word is forbidden. There ya go.

Then there's the nicknames like Krauts or Frogs for the Germans and French, both originating from foodstuffs (sauerkraut and frogs legs) or 'Cloggies' for the Dutch (after the wooden clogs of their national costume obviously). Then the Americans call us 'Limeys' after the Royal Navy gave their sailors limes to eat to prevent scurvy (was originally 'limesuckers'). These are more humorous than intended for disrespect, but we know that the professional umbrage brigade may say otherwise.

its like a group of that specific ethnicity deemed it offensive and as soon as they did that you can no longer use it. I remember being a kid and having a friend who lived down the street who was from Pakistan and we called him a paki and so did all the families. It was just short form when they wanted to take a short cut to explain who they were. Example "did you hear the paki family down the street bought a nice new car" "That paki family are such nice people". But we usually called them by their names if we could because yes they are just people afterall.

People decided that we are all humans why do you need to use the term paki at all because you are separating them by the color of their skin. Well they are different. They cooked different foods, they smelled of their foods, they talked different. It doesnt mean it was bad it was just a way to describe them since they came from somewhere different from us. But the problem is people gave it power because racists starting using the term "those stinky pakis" referring to them smelling like curry and using it in a hateful manner.

The reason why frog became offensive is because people started using it in offensive manner. Racists etc would be like those damn N word, Japs and frogs! The term frog derived from them eating frog legs, its true. But then people used it to define them all and therefore became offensive. Im not offended by it but it is what it is.

Basically racists defined what was offensive because they used the terms as negative hate labels to specific races. Black racists tried to coin the term cracker and honky to get back at us. The problem is it will never be equally as damaging because we were never suppressed by them. So it falls into the same category as japs.

I dont think limey is offensive? We use it here when we imitate you. Any time I run into a family member from there alot of the people will say in their accent aye ya limey bastard!

I personally feel like there are only a few racist words, N word, Nips, Chin*. And the most powerful being the N word followed by Chin*. Because people were killed and treated like shit for the color of their skin and the shape of the eyes. All these other words are borderline to me, I can get it when people get offended but I can also hear the words being spoken and be like meh. The N word makes me cringe, its the only one. Not because to pander to them but because it was a very powerful word and how an entire group of people were treated because they were born with a different colored skin. Same organs, same brains, same everything but color. And I try to understand how people allowed that and how it was normal. I guess maybe evolution of the human brain over time, I dunno.

Social media has been the biggest divider of humanity since humans dividing themselves back in the slavery days and I believe in freedom of speech but the day a politician suggests they be closed down, is the day I run to vote for that person.

let's put aside that faily nearly every person that fought during WW2 is dead (or near to) its a safe bet today's great proportion of racicts arent from that war (becuase we were talking about two terms from that era)
but let's look at ANY war.....I'm pretty sure a far greater percent of bigots and hate mongers have never once served a minute in their lives (add to that theyres plenty of non-racist persons who do serve).

And all THAT aside, I wasnt even speaking to people who served - I was speaking of the general populace. If you think because well, once, someone, somewhere once did to somewhere at some time in my family tree gives me license to be a racist, well, they ARE an asshat. If you can't seperate an entire group or race from an individual or instance, there's a good place to look for a deeper reality check
Strange you make it sound idealism is bad and my sense of reality is not so poorly tuned, ty - I only have to come as far as the forum to find self-entitled bigots and zealots. ;)
You can't unwrite history or deny the past. It ain't that straightforward. Humankind isn't perfect and people have long memories, handed down. I lived a short while in South Africa. The Afrikaaners who I met (weren't around in the Boer War obviously ) would invariably bring up the fact that the British, not the Germans, were the first people to make and use concentration camps for civilians and to this day that remains a huge stain on this country's past in their view. And they're quite right.
It's not just the military who suffer in most wars, but the civilian populations. Why do you think the Japanese are so despised in China - by people who weren't around when the Rape Of Nanking took place?
Yes, it'd be great to see people of all sides of the old divides link arms and sing Kumbaya under a make-love-not-war banner, but alas you can't legislate for the frailties of human nature.

Well, agreed, words have power....mostly it's the emotion and intent imbued into the word (or history of usage).
However, there are still some words, that simply saying, well "I" dont see it as offensive, doesnt make it any less offensive, or "I" didnt mean it offensively doesnt mitigate the offensiveness of it.
I'm fairly left leaning. And believe there's a great many instances I roll my eyes and go oh, FFS thats just TOO much.

Here's a tongue-in-cheek example. If you appear as outwardly male but prefer to be addressed by a female pronoun..why not? What does it cost me. Nothing.
If you want to be addressed as Smurftastically Shimro of the 1st Order, from the planet Pornulon, I'm probably just going to call you a nutbar.

No, we can't unwrite history and no we can't cure or mandate human idiosyncrasies. We can however, educate a population, and moreso a younger generation to recognize people are people, borders are (mostly) arbitrary constructs and no one race or colour is inherently better or worse . I sure as fuck don't want to sit around and sing Kumbaya. I also dont want aother generation of bigots and racists who we should excuse, because, it's just their funny little way. It all starts somewhere. Like not excusing bigots and racists - and let's be clear here, not all these poor people are victims... plenty just suffer from plain old ignorance and self-entitlement, and white privilege and nothing more

and sounds so benign, almost friendly :D

For me, it is the word 'Abbo" - derogatory and spiteful and totally demeaning to a people who are the oldest inhabitants of the planet.

As for social media - just don't get me started.

It isnt one youd really hear here. I gather it's offensive, but I've no point of reference.
We have obviously, our own version of aboriginal persons, but there's its whole own box of slurs.

If you use that photo in private sector like skype Avatar and you don't have any Aboriginal friend or all of your Aboriginal friends are OK with it, I don't see any problem with using it.

But if you want to use it on public forum like Casinomeister, I don't think that is a good idea. I'm pretty sure there are some Aboriginal people feel offended by that photo, and I really don't agree with the attitude "People can use any photo or words they like, if you feel offended, get a life."

Some Aboriginal people feel offended by that photo, not because they are over-sensitive, because they have encountered racism in their life.

This is not about politically correct, this is about respecting other people's life and feeling.

But some folk have trouble thinking past their own noses
