IRS documents released Wednesday suggest that the tax collection agency believes it can read American citizens' emails without a warrant.

The files were released to the American Civil Liberties Union under a Freedom of Information Act request. The organization is working to determine just how broadly federal law enforcement agencies like the FBI or the IRS' Criminal Tax Division interpret their authority to snoop through inboxes.

There's no such thing as anonymous anymore, neither online nor offline. They can track everything, they can recover pretty much every electronic data, from deleted pics on a camera to deleted text messages on your cell phone. Canadian government tried to pass a law last year that would require all internet providers to keep a log file of everything you do online for 7 years, and would allow law enforcement to look at it without a warrant. How friggin' crazy is that?

That's not all though, now they install license plate readers and they can know exactly where you went and when. Soon with cameras and facial recognition it's going to get much worse.

This isn't conspiracy stuff by the way, it's reality.

The sad part is you'll always find people to approve this kind of shit "if you do nothing wrong then you shouldn't worry". Scary world we live in.

It seems to me that governments are becoming more authoritarian everywhere, constantly striving to overreach their mandates....but then, as an electorate, we're allowing it.

Scary because you DO have something to fear as it would allow "fishing expedition" type investigations. There is also the danger of how your activities are interpreted. We also have internment without trial in many anti terrorism acts, and already this has created a stir. Currently, surveillance of an individual has to start with a formal process, such as a warrant. Removing the need for this step is dangerous.

Those with something to hide will adapt, and will ensure they do their best to frustrate electronic surveillance.

Since so many internet scams flourish, and the perpetrators often cannot be traced, there is anonymity available if you work hard enough at it. Only the average users can be easily traced.
