Definitely recommend getting an SSD if you do anything else than play casinos, who knows maybe in a couple years MGS will fix their stupid software to let you choose where to install. Also think it makes a lot more sense to just go for a new computer, price difference isn't big compared to upgrading an old one and you can make sure all components are on an equal level.

When I researched building my new computer some months ago it turned out buying parts was more expensive than getting all the parts from the same company and have them put it together. Makes sense since they can be sure they get to sell you all components instead of the customer going to 5 different stores for parts and the added profit of that is probably higher than the cost for them to put the components together.

I will probably do both.

It's too early to go for SSD because of the problem with MGS insisting on installing to the root of the boot drive. This would override any settings designed to keep the SSD as a OS drive, and for files that are frequently read, but rarely written to.

I have seen the MGS multiple updates, and even several times a month including old games being updated without obvious reason. Looking at my current boot drive, I can see that MGS is a heavy writer of thousands upon thousands of tiny files every month. This would reduce the lifespan of an SSD, and at present they are pretty expensive.

The current crop of SSDs don't seem all that much faster than a high speed conventional SATA drive, such as the 10,000 rpm Velociraptor from WD. There are some 15,000 RPM drives, but they are VERY expensive, and even some SSD drives are cheaper. They seem to be "enterprise" drives for fast servers, rather than home computers.

SCAN are offering a "supercomputer on your desk" for 10K, which has twin multicore processors and is designed to allow the home user to do the things that used to be the preserve of governments and big companies.
