I know some places offer free health care but here in the USA they don't. Lucky or unlucky me i'm insured but some are not. Even though my son has dental insurance from his job i found out just how money hungry some company's are. He broke a tooth and has been in severe pain. He went to his dentist yesterday and could not even get a shot to deaden his mouth without paying money. It will be 100 bucks we won't have until next week to get that tooth fixed. He stayed up all night in pain because of it. Being a new dad and a working one at that i think it is screwed up.He has his own place him and his wife but stayed a few hours here with me . I know that when i go to the ER or even to my regular 7 doctors they add things just to milk my insurance. I don't speak about it much or even comment in the forum much but i have 2 auto immune illnesses and an overlapping one. I think free health care for all should be a given. I told my son to go to the emergency room but that would be a temporary fix. I hate seeing him in pain. He could always do what my dad did and pull the nub out with pliers :eek2: :eek2: ...just kidding.

Depends on how well "free" is done in the UK the NHS is not in the best shape but it works very well for a service that employees so many people and has to cope with the aging population.

On the downside Dentists are not free and social care is also unaffordable for a lot of people.

So you can only have so much free and then you have to ask the people to pay for it even if they don't use it.

I do not know how health care works in the UK or anywhere else for that matter. It just seems like if your paying for something every 2 weeks directly out of your pay check you should be able to at least get a shot that is covered. I guess i am mostly upset seeing my son in so much pain. I do however think any health care would be better then non at all in reference to me saying health care should be free for everyone. I have seen so many people suffer from things that are beyond their control like cancer for instance. My brother who passed a few years ago from cancer was a Veteran and had to wait a year to get into the VA clinic when he started getting sick. Who is to say that he would still be here if it was caught early enough. Some people who get sick do not go seek treatment because they are uninsured and can't afford it. Sure diet and exercise might help prevent some things but not all. IMHO some help would be nice.

Lmao my son is 27....you must have not read the part where he has a wife and new child and his own home.....i gamble and i work also and pay bills etc. Spin UK you were so quick to chime in you also missed the part where they have a new child and being a working couple they had expenses to cover from the birth of the baby, hospital stay etc. As far as me gambling i spend my hard earned pennies playing what i want to. I helped with some of the burden of my new grand child plus Christmas gifts etc. I will enjoy the remainder of my weeks, months or years enjoying my life as i will. Next time please read the post before you comment. Again to anyone who mis reads this post....My son is 27. I was commenting on the fact he has to pay for a shot for a broken tooth with dental insurance. I also commented that health care should be free for all. I did not however say that my son was a minor child. I m not sure why my gambling has a thing in this world to do with this post in the attic but ok. 100 bucks is not a lot but right now he is going to wait until pay day. I think he is a bit afraid because it will be surgery and his first one. Please read the post thank you.

I have had a painful tooth a few months back, and two things I found that helped were clove oil on a cotton ball held against the tooth area but even better than that, a disposable dissolvable aspirin held directly against the area, after a minute or two it will start to crumble but you can just rub it around the area, took about three aspirins but soon the pain and throbbing began to subside.

$100 bucks isn't too bad if it means the tooth gets fixed, nothing worse than dental pain to make you feel miserable. maybe they'll be able to save what's left of his tooth and bond a crown onto it, that would cost more than £100 in the uk, or perhaps they will pull it out?

@mack341 No $100 bucks isn't bad hun i think i did a horrible job posting my thoughts. I was just saying that with health insurance it was a shame to have to pay for a shot. Also the 100 bucks for tooth extraction surgery is a bit much to me. I am still confused as to why my gambling was called into question. I did have a savings but my new grand baby came early and to have a child in the USA even with insurance its about 10,000 out of pocket. My first grand baby so of course i pitched in and helped. Right now we are drained until tax time and pay day. I have not even made a deposit at my fav. casino in weeks. Even then its around 20 i deposit. I am a true penny pincher although i enjoy my few moments of spin time. I do not think it's the 100 bucks though, i really think he is more afraid of the procedure but he won't admit it. After coming out of my own pocket with thousands i do not think it can be called into question that i can not help atm (not that he asked) . It was just more of a wth moment. By the by...thanks for the suggestion. I will let him know to try it. He was given antibiotics and ibuprofen for pain. It is his wisdom tooth so it has been painful for him. I believe he will have it pulled out.

@rena35 I read your post and totally got where you were coming from. I am totally clueless about insurance but I would have thought if you have it that the shot would have been covered but obviously not!

As you say your son is 27 so please ignore any persons implying that you shouldnt have the odd little deposit and enjoy a gamble now and then That remark was totally out of order and misplaced. You enjoy and don't feel the need to defend yourself as you have done nothing wrong.

I do hope your son is out of pain soon. Good suggestions there from @mack341 re pain relief.

As you live in the US I'm unable to tell you the best place to get it but you can look in Google for valerian extract or liquid.

In case you find it, take a piece of cotton wool, put 4-5 drops of the liquid on then roll it in a small ball and put next to the tooth. In around 15-20 min it will calm the nervous system down and will help him to fall asleep.

I had a very bad toothache once and this liquid was the best of any medicine I have ever found.

He can also try Corvalol drops which are based on the Valerian root.

@Borgie Your post almost made me cry because sometimes i feel so out of place here but i do enjoy reading the posts and comments. I do not often even mention my health and should really be taking it easy but i enjoy working when i can. Sitting looking at 4 walls would doom me for sure. I know i don't have to explain but i should have said in my opening post he is an adult but he is still my child. Seeing him in pain hurts me. Credit is very important and creditors look at hospital bills, unpaid bills etc. and i do not want my son to be turned down for the house he wants to buy because of it. That is why we took care of the birth expense post haste. My life has been lived and i did leave a hefty life insurance policy for the day i do leave the earth. Thank you and Mack so very much for being able to understand the post i butchered so badly

Rena I didn't think there was anything wrong with your posts ...it's mad to have health insurance and you're still not able to get prompt treatment and have to pay extra on top, they always want it both ways insurance companies.

I've discussed the US healthcare system with slotplayer and harry in the trump/nk thread, the figures I found showed that the US system is the most expensive in the world and also the Govt spending on healthcare is very high despite not providing universal health coverage like the NHS [although dentistry is 3/4 private in the uk, a lower wisdom tooth extraction will often be carried out in hospital] Somebody must be making a lot of money from that health care system.

My dentist removed both my upper wisdom teeth and it wasn't too bad but he left my lower ones in situ, as they are harder to remove. He'd be better trying to save it if it is a lower one, I think if you removed say the bottom left one you might have to remove the bottom right one too, so your mouth and bite was balanced, but I'm no expert just a sufferer over the years!

I hope he gets it all resolved and can get back to enjoying his life, with his new born child and home :)

@mack341 how long were you down? I think another reason might be because he has vacation time coming and does not want to miss too much work. A lot of this i am guessing because he did mention he wanted to take a family trip when his vacation time kicks in. I personally think his employer will understand. He works for a finance company but he has been there for 4 years and never lays out. From what i know, if that tooth gets infected it can be very bad. I am not a dentist though so i am not sure. Also Google has a tendency of telling you, your dying from various things . I searched chest pain and....well of course i ended up in the ER with mild indigestion .

 yeah self diagnosis always leaves me in a panic for a few days, the symptoms are so similar sometimes between problems.

For the upper wisdom teeth, the sockets were a bit inflamed for a day or two but no worse really than an ordinary extraction of a back tooth, had to eat soft foods like scambled eggs or mash.

I think the lower wisdoms are more painful to remove, bound to have a fair bit of swelling I think. Once they're gone he feel 100% better I'm sure, he's your son so it's natural that you're worried about him, as you say age doesn't really come into it, and I'm sure he appreciates your concern and care and it's helping him to cope.

The opposite where a parent doesn't care is awful for a son or daughter.

Yeah, I had my lowers out and had to go somewhere for it (think it cost 100 quid?) as they couldn't do it in the normal dentist - something to do with fact they're more likely to be impacted than the upper ones.

I've broken both arms, bust out my knee etc and none of them have been even close to the pain i had with those teeth :eek2:

Of course, throwing down ultimatums or not treating patients isn't something that should really go on in a developed country is it. Even if said fees were to be paid back at a later date.

This is where the NHS excels for the most part, and was really designed for these 'minor' A & E issues. I'm 99% certain they'd at the very least numb the tooth and send you on your way with a batch of painkillers. Even NHS dentists would book in next-day appointments etc.

So whilst our health care is perhaps too lenient, and America's too stringent, countries like Germany seem to have the right balance with universal healthcare & insurance
