Gratis as in free spech or gratis as in beer... or gratis as in you buy the beer!

As a gambler for all my life online enterteinment is surely something we all know about. However I have noticed over the years how many casinos doesnt really care for standards, common sence or even marketing norms. In this post I want to adress the casinos that I find rudly annoying and they piss me off and have now because of this entered my spam folder forever. To bad if they were to send me email I need to see - as this is now to late dur to their fraudulent email campaigns.

If we look into the definition of FREE, as this is the wording they chose to throw around them as if there are no laws to give them penalties. Honestly, I adress Casinomeister for this matter as I think its a DAMN good issue to take into account for an accredited casino. There should not be any reason to play buy such idiotic standards, I mean TV commercials cannot do this so why should regulated casinos - credited as such - be able to do this!

So lets look into the word free first. Its not that simple, so there are two common interpretations.

WHAT DOES FREE MEAN, LETS MAKE SOME DEFINITIONS:

FREE1 : Free as in speech
This is the one we suppose it always is as this one which is free in the sense of having no restrictions; libre.
This would be the ultimate FREE for a casino to use as this is what we all expect ut to be, without any clauses or penalties.

FREE2 : Free as in beer
This is a more common one, as nothing is free like the term "there is no such thing as a free lunch." However this term is still free for the consumer, since it's free in the sense of costing no money; gratis.
This would be the ultimate FREE for a casino to use as this is what we all expect ut to be, without any clauses or penalties. The cost is put on the casino - hopefully not on other players :)

That being said, for a casino to even use the term FREE they are actually inventing their own terminology and I think it's about time we do something about it - or maby its astalavista for the users and hopefully we all quit this entertainment which have low standards, infamous software for endless debates and often bad customer support aswell (well, I should mention that the accredited section does have a few casinos which excellent support).

So we need to extend the list of definitions to encorporate the casinos for "fair use" of their popular term "freespins":

FREE3 : Free as in spins
This obviously means that the spins are free, however you are not allowed to collect your winnings unless completing a set of rules. The rules usually include having to wager your total winnings 35+ times, and if never deposited you also ned to deposit. Sometimes there is even a maximum amount you are allowed to keep if you shuld be so lucky.

I would argue that the casinos requring you to deposit, cannot use the word free at all as it definately is not when you need to "lend" them a deposit before getting it back.

FREE4 : Free as in up to X spins could be yours
This is a new one lately where you get awared spins in batched after completing X amount of freespins in given games. Think how nasty this one is, you will see from examples below.

FREE5 : Free as in metting certain campaign criteria you will be awarded spins
Here there would be rules and criteria that needs to be met, theese will in 99% of all possible cases require you to deposit. When criteria are met, you will be awarded FREE3 - without any deposit requirments.

FREE6 : Free as in deposit match camouflaged as spins.
Typically campaign offering 100 freespins, all you need to do is deposit a 100 and they are yours! Don't you want them? Go get them!

FREE7 : Free as in spins awarded for winning tournaments which requires deposit
I hope I do not get to FREE8 now as there really isnt any point I guess you see the pattern here. The free has lost all its meaning. And we seem to allow this behaviour!

SHAME ON US PLAYERS AND SHAME ON CAINOMEISTER FOR NOT BREATHING DOWN THEIR NECKS FOR THIS! Can we boikot casinos? It would help! I promise you!

So let me start a shitlist here, and correct me if I am wrong but I hope people join me on this one. We could end up straightening theese crooked casinos out and get better offers that doesnt straight up lie in our face. I leave the conclusion for each entry below up to you but needless to say I think they all suck donkey balls and I would tell it to their face without hesitation were I ever to meet any of theese liars at any point in my life! False advertising is just evil, none professional and often a sign of crappy managment!

So before I start - I think all of you casinos below here should really rethink what you are doing because you are nothing other than morons preying on gamblers hoping to HOOK them in while pinning ECOGRA and ganmbling anonymous proudly to your chest... Doing false advertising meaning you really do not give a shit!

Here we go, I will start with 10 casinos this round hopefylly you can add more to the list. All of theese have several more promos and have been doing this for a long time, some just upped their game aswell and just became a lot worse with their advertising.

Our definitions are : FREE1 FREE2 FREE3 FREE4 FREE5 FREE6 and FREE7

FINAL THOUGHTS

This goes out to the casino representatives reading this, you should keep in mind that my train of though could possibly be the only one left in this world so there are no reason to throw away a though on what I wrote. For all I know your research has proven time and time again that gamplers in general must be so stupid and lack intelligence that they do not have the balls to complain about this or if they do you do not care. You have possibly found out that the sum of all idiots compared to the sum of me going up in flames over this are much larger - so screw rules and have it your way and write the newletters as they are ment for people heavily entoxicated dumbfooled to pull cash out of their pocket to recieve their free gifts!

I argue that most your customers doesnt have tons of money to waste all year round, and when there is little money or lots of emails you start paying attention to what they actually say! One thing is definately sure - I have annoyed me long enogh now and the result is permanently spam so whatever you try to communicate to me in future will actually be junk! It lies in my junk - I put it there by RULE - so it must be junk maby camouflaged as a gold nugget but inspect it and it will be junk!

You fool noone byu this - people like me just need to learn the common gambler that they HAVE TO react to so that you will feel it in your wallet! Its a casino - how hard is it to make money, we love the games from getgo so please stop lying and start using a form of language that actually works in the real world!

THE END

I hope this can turn out to be a constructive and fair debate on some basic rules for what a casino may use as promotional text or heades - atleast if they want to be accredited and get the thumbs up!

It's become a popular tactic used by casinos nowadays, seeing the words 'free' will automatically draw the player in and most likely read the entire email instead of insta-deleting it.

It is sad how far some casinos have fallen that they have to resort to ensnaring people with misleading wordplay, I for one detest the FREE4 or FREE 5 type offers, or the "You have £20 in your account!" headers, only to find out I need to deposit £50 to unlock these free funds

Thankfully, on the whole I'd say that most of this type of spam is used by lesser-known or unaccredited casinos at present, but you can see it creeping in at some of the better establishments too. Pretty sad :(

Thanks for your post!

I also feel strongly about this.
The competition has become so intense that most casinos will do whatever it takes to make you read their e-mail offers.
No wonder that it's in the header or subject most of the lying occurs
I'm sure that free has to mean "of no cost" according to most if not all countries' advertising standards.

I've had countless offers like the ones you're describing.
NorskeAutomater sent me this on Christmas Eve.
Get 50 freespins on Secrets of Christmas. (NO: Få 50 gratisspinn på Secrets of Christmas!)
Of course it turned to be a deposit offer.

That certainly sounds like a new rule, I am sure I seen this one but cant remember where. I guess the rule should be like this:

FREE8 - Free as in free cash in your account ready to wager! *
* Upon login into the casino you will learn that the funds are locked and for removal of the lock the player needs to a) verify or b) identify his payment option according to set amount in T&C that are attached to the locked free money you have recieved.

I digress ....

I find this rule especially funny from a mushroom perspective.. Let me explain. If we consider the locked amount metaphorical, its easy to see a lock that is blocking the access for the free money. Now that we have
You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.
our imaginary lock the whole FREE concept is suddenly solved. Actually the example of £20 in your account, howebver needing to deposit £50 to unlock translates in mushroom mode into! You have £20 in your account! Darn, for some reason you have been penalized for XYZ reason from whatever in the course of the casino account lifetime - and therefor got a bonus lock attached for your account. This means all future bonuses will not be available - however they will be accumulated so you will not lose them. To remove the penalty there are one option though, you could deposit £50 which verifies you are not a bonus abuser but a depositing player. We are then allowed to remove the lock and, hey, you could even play the free £20 you got congrats!

Given such mombo jumbo the casino could totally remove all references to false marketing and they could even boast of being one of the only casinos on the internet that infact delivers FREE1 spins! Now thats a bloody good casino I think, really putting their customers needs at first! Removing any possible problem with themselves - and putting all problems over on the customer - even having to invent a flaw for each user so they have an answer to why the systen enabled the lock in the first place.

and back to post...

I also feel strongly about this.

Most of the examples from FREE3-FREE7 do add the rotten additional information in their email, so at best I should pat them on their shoulder for making me once more think theese guys are wasting my time. It is as if they havnt done their research or have any experience in marketing. How was it again with
You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.
, do we see them? The header is the most important line of text of all - and if we get lied to there it does have its consequences. It doesnt really work anywhere, being a girl you meet for the first time looking totally different. Ordering a new PC getting completely different spec than ordered. Heck, going to the bank to withdraw a $1000 and when you are going out the door you have only $700. What do we do with people that lie to us - we ignore them! So they will be ignored!

I know, its to much to ask for since this would also mean closing great casinos that does fail from time to time

The more I think of it right now, I kind of wonder if its possible to make a hugely boiled down rule that sounds like this:

1. If a casino promotes spins, bonuses or cash using the word FREE or GRATIS when they infact do require deposits.

Delete account, bye bye! Because from here to adding funny T&C the road is extremely short! The casino has already been clear in one thing: We will say whatever the fuck you need to hear - for you to deposit at our casino installation!

I'm sure that free has to mean "of no cost" according to most if not all countries' advertising standards..

I agree on this, this fits FREE1 and FREE2 as the consumer (which is us the gamblers) expect no strings attached or hidden anything when it's free! I personally expect a free offer in life belonging to the FREE2 category as I assume someone sponsored it, like a free lunch where the boss picks up the tab.

and finally, I must digress in christmas times ....

How do we get all the readers of casinomeister to gather their mindpower and grow a pair of new "free bullshit" detector antennas. In the end it is we the players, gamblers or thrill seekers for all I care - that make the casinos even exist in the first place. Without us they are nothing, they seize to exist. So why do we let them behave like a tyrrant and do as they please, I do not understand. We should actively make sure they get to waste a lot of support time when they blatantly lie in promotions, deceive and trick you in support and worstly have a bad connection making their service lagg. The only language people running such casinos understand is money. If we do not do this I must belive that they slowly slide into their own dark part of the internet - probably the rogue section here in casinomeister - where everything is allowed and everyon may shut the fuck up as soon as there are any enqueries... Even casinomeister states you are on your own, but still I suppose theese sites can add a PNG in their footer for both supporting Casinomeister and being regulated by Ecogra or whatever they may please. Since noone bothers, who cares? They even were running modified Netent software and theese were not shut down either. It seems that this kind of casino must be the dream operation of any crook! Install the software, promote the server and engage the spammers and hackers to hose your site down with gamblers itching for those great offers!

Now what to do if you woke up blind a morning and registered on such a casino and just as your eye site got back, you win a damn cool million! After a week or two you understand there is no way in hell this money will see your hands and you almost lose eye site again when seing the website is flagged as a do not play if you enjoy getting paid under rogue casinos. That means - your stupid and stupid people are left alone! I am pretty sure this is very similar to the concluding answer from both Netent and Ecogra aswell so you are done! Good bye!

Luckily there are options for a disgruntled winner,

. Surely this is the first that comes to mind, and all the offsprings of it. Earlier used by larger networks to blackmail casinos for their uptime, but nowadays a single person could do it without much problems. But thats the rogue section, I for one does not understand why there are not agencies or mechanisms that makes theese sites go down - why are they even up? It almost seems like its legitimate to be illegal when it comes to fucking with peoples money! So sad!

What is so wrong by being honest I wonder, they really have nothing to offer at all theese casinos unless you give it to them first?

I giess that is the conclution for FREE3-FREE8 - their way of running the casinos makes it impossible to give away anything so they turn to selling snake oil - they are snake oil salesman! Infact they are even better, because they are not selling anything... you get the snake oil for free!

Most certainly one of my hot subjects.

I think its a shame to use such words, 20 Free spins, Yet have to deposit to received them? How on earth has that ever been the word for free.

I am glad you pointed Dunder out as I have posted about this just a few days ago. They go straight in the trash bin.

Or those bad translation companies that I wish I could slap.

For Swedish people reading 32Reds promotions then the word Bonus are translated to Gratis. Not so very free and since the staff are English then how would they know it's wrong.
They do know it now but I guess they think it looks good so it stays

Casinos are doing searches on words to see what are tempting and are drawing in customers. Words I've complained about they refuse to remove because their investigation have told them that those words are profitable. Nice :)
I guess the word free is one of them.

who has a regular bonus in their Norwegian section where you deposit 100 for 500 free. Thats like getting their welcome offer again, so doesnt sound that far fetched. However don't bother as this is what will happen!

1. You wonder where the heck did that bonus go?
2. You start hitting that LIVE CHAT support and ask for help on that 500 bonus you just opted for
3. Support will understand nothing, and you will be the reason for this error as they has no such promo.
4. You are asked to verify this promo for them, and upon visiting bonus section which clearly stated deposit 100 get 500 ekstra are now gone, moved into active bonuses with more details. One detail sticks out and is referring to a fantastic 50% match bonus up to 1000 NOK or 500 I am not sure (checked if that promo was now, but it wasnt. I recall it being the weekly superman promo).
5. Annoyed you try telling support the heading text which made you take the promo is no longer there, and the bonus now states correctly. You are being told there was no error and you must have read wrong.

Luckily for me I have friends I can call to verify this as I usually get madly frustrated when people are trying to make me look stupid - and being wrong is being stupid! So see the attached image and tell me if this is not a 500 NOK bonus if you deposit 100 NOK.

I changed language for my page and seing the english version its clear that those translating these bonuses are not always awake. It was supposed to say 50 - so my gut feeling that from euro to dollar you multiply with 1 and from that to norwegian you multiply with 10. No wonder you lose money if withdrawing in currency though say teller -> skrill account -> skrill account !!

Anyway this was in june 2016 and I did inform the support of the error, infact I demanded that I should have been credited the funds since their campaign said so! Also since their ordinary welcome offer is the same - 500% match, I didnt find it strange however I did look at it as a fantastic offer not many casios left that offers this twize! However I was declined, and had to be assured that I could now expect this since the error was on the translation side and not theirs.

So yes those translations are not only bad, you get screwed over on them aswell when you apporach them! So expekt casino - hat off for your kindness! I believe they still havnt changed it either, I believe I noticed it a week or two ago. But maby one day? I guess as long as they do not do anything in return for their fuckup it doesnt really matter - infact I would think many more deposits on this one heck I did!

But this falls in the same pitfall as FREE spins! My trust and interest for Expekt bonuses is from there gone as there are lots of casinos fighting for that attention, and all people I know playing share this information. After all better we help each other - the casino doesnt seem to help unless you lose a fortune, you always get some crackers after throwing away some cakes if you share some tears :D

Ill see if Ill take some time sifting though my email and pick out more emails with theese flaws so that they all go under the same treatment. After that I should probably put up a reversed post aswell, the casnios that keeps it real! Real offers with bonus of all sorts and occational free stuff! Not sure but I have a feeling there is a casino or two in there that doesnt have to waste the words "No deposit required!" in their title when offering free spins - that would be awesome!

Thank you for the interest in this topic - lets make some commotion or atleast define what our options are

Thank you all for having interest in this topic, please share your thoughts and by no way be afraid of pointing out what casino did what and why. Just keep track of chat logs for reference and screenshots in situations people may try twisting your words. If you wouldnt want to be the one hanging a casino to dry send the info on PM to me and I could front it for you as I have absolutely NO problem getting it out there if its unfair! My "investment" over the past 20 years have been substantial so I take great pleasure in seing casinos treating players well and fair! That is their job, they have nothing to do with the software thats netent, microgaming and suchs table. This is why the players NEED to put pressure on those that do not deliver what we crave at the best possible way. We need real offers, we trust them with out money, we should be trusted back and treaded as such.

I have lots of positive feedback to casinos, but thats another day and another thread. :) So not being mentioned in here is already a thumb up from me :)

All doesn't need to be said at once right now immediately

The word 'free' in English has about 12 different meanings, not as many as 'set' which has 29!

We therefore know the meaning of 'free' is purely contextual.

Guts gave free spins that were free - no wagering, no restrictions etc. This is what most people consider to be 'free' i.e. no caveats.

'Free spins' i.e. deposit £50 get 100% and 50 free spins is correct use of 'free' in one context only - that is these 'free' spins are actually 'bonus' spins in that they are a bonus on your deposit and they have bonus rules applied i.e. wagering. They are free at the point you use them then become not-so free afterwards when the wagering applies.

It all boils down to lack of attention by the ASA to casino advertising and offers. We have just seen in another thread examples of 32red BS advertising on Sky TV and a dodgy affiliate ad for Ladbrokes which both use out-of-date information today.

If they can get away with this then stretching definitions of the word 'free' will easily slip through the net.

Each to their own. I quite like your well thought out and lengthy posts.

But don't let Vinyl see them....in fact you two should have a 'post-off' based on a variety of subjects:cool:

I'll even let you pick from one of three topics to get started:

Sex

Religion

Politics

No problem, I like a detailed post! You can have the new honorary title of 'The Scandinavian Vinylweatherman' !!:D

I dont mind long posts or long rants so long as they are formatted which in this case they are  nowt worse than seeing a block of text a page long.

And I get the OPS issue , free when its not free is bollocks. You can tell these days the more desperate a casino is, with the more unrealistic sounding "offers" and "freebies"

Back in the day when I was a younger healthier gambler I would fall for it time and again. Not so these days, and have weaned myself of most bonuses or freebies these days anyway
so i dont take any notice.
