Mohegan Sun Laying Off More Than 300 Workers; CEO Replaced

UNCASVILLE— Mohegan Sun is laying off more than 300 employees and replacing its chief executive officer, the Mohegan Tribe’s top casino official said Thursday.
Jeffrey Hartmann, a Mohegan Sun executive since 1996 and the casino’s CEO since 2011, left the casino Wednesday, said Mitchell Etess, CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority.

Etess said Bobby Soper, CEO of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, the authority’s race track casino in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., would replace Hartmann. Etess declined to discuss the circumstances of Hartmann’s departure.

Etess said 282 employees were being laid off immediately and that 46 more would be let go at the end of October when the casino closes Birches, an authority-owned restaurant that will reopen under new ownership.

The casino also will shut down its keno operation, Etess said.

The layoffs — the casino’s second mass layoffs in two years — involve employees in virtually every department and include some at all levels, from vice president on down, he said.

“You have to put this in the context of the amazing decline in business we’ve experienced,” Etess said. “The last thing we ever want to do is lay people off, but we had to do this to make the size of our workforce appropriate to our business volumes.”

Casino executives have attributed the persistent decline in revenues at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino, its nearby competitor, to the economy’s weak recovery and increasing competition, most recently from Resorts World Casino at the Aqueduct race track in New York City, which debuted last October, and to a lesser extent Revel, a $2.4 billion casino that opened in April in Atlantic City, N.J.

On Sept. 14, 2010, Mohegan Sun announced it was eliminating 475 positions, the majority of them in the casino’s food-and-beverage department. At the time, the casino said about 120 workers whose positions were eliminated would be able to transition into other jobs at Mohegan Sun, meaning the casino’s workforce was to be reduced by about 355 employees. At the same time, the casino announced it would close one of its two buffet restaurants and two casino-owned outlets in its food court that reopened under third-party operators.

Slots revenue, generally considered a reliable indicator of a casino’s overall financial health, has been declining at Mohegan Sun for five years. Slots “win” — the amount of wagers the casino keeps after paying out prizes — has fallen each month this year compared to the corresponding month in 2011.

In July, typically the casino’s busiest month, the win was down 10.4 percent. In August, it was down 6 percent, a percentage that would have been higher had Tropical Storm Irene not taken a toll on casino revenues in August 2011.

For the first eight months of 2012, Mohegan Sun’s slots win was down 6.7 percent over the same period in 2011. Comparing August 2012 to August 2007, the decline is 32.6 percent.

Earlier, the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, the entity that operates the casino, reported that its net income, or profit, for the third quarter of its 2012 fiscal year — April, May and June — was down 4.7 percent over the same quarter the previous year.

Resorts World, the New York City facility that operates slots-like video display terminals and electronic table games, generated more slots win than Mohegan Sun last month — $58.6 million to $56.3 million — than it did in April and May. Resorts World generated “handle” — the total amount of wagers — of more than $1.1 billion in August, far outstripping Mohegan Sun’s handle of $687.2 million.

The Mohegan gaming authority refinanced $1.6 billion in long-term debt in March, pushing back maturity dates to 2015 and later.

Foxwoods is a lot of halabaloo about nothing. I prefer AC's different props to a single big one. You could tell
if it's a popular place by the age and look of the cocktail girls. Foxwoods has some of the oldest ones anywhere.
Unless a specific need arises, I wouldnt go back. Especially since there is a casino in Queens now.

Mohegan Sun in Conn. announces retail expansion

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun casino announced Tuesday its first major expansion in five years with a $50 million project calling for more retail space, featuring a New England food market, a multiplex movie theater, bowling and clothing stores.

The Indian-run casino faces falling slot revenue and intense competition in the Northeast, but is betting on the improving economy as it prepares to break ground later this year on the 200,000-square-foot project it calls the Downtown District. The project is expected to open in 2015.

Mitchell Etess, chief executive officer of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, which also runs the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Wilkes Barre, Pa., said financing and tenants are in place. The project is intended to draw customers who want to shop as much as play the slots, he said.

‘‘Now, people come here to game and shop. I think you'll have a certain amount of people when this is finished, they’re going to come here to shop and game,’’ Etess said. ‘‘It’s somewhat semantical but it opens you up to a whole new market of customers who are both your retail and gaming.’’

Etess said the new retail space, in addition to the current 130,000 square feet of stores and restaurants, will help boost entertainment at the Mohegan Sun that includes women’s basketball and concerts. The new American Athletic Conference announced two weeks ago that its 2014 tournament will be at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

Interesting - I just hope they don't make it as HUGE as Foxwoods.

The Mohegan has nice shopping options but it could be improved on...

Mohegan Comes To $16M Agreement With Palmer, Mass. Officials On Casino Deal
Mohegan Sun's hopes for a Bay State resort casino took a step forward Thursday as Palmer town officials and casino executives have reached an financial agreement covering mitigation payments and revenue sharing amounts.

Approval of the deal — which is still subject votes from local officials as well as a town referendum — would make Mohegan Sun Massachusetts the last of three casino developers to enter this phase of the competition for western Massachusetts' sole casino license.

"It's a very good deal for the town," said Charlie Blanchard, town manager of Palmer, Mass. "It's a fair deal for Mohegan."

The agreement calls for $16 million in annual payments to the town for economic development, larger fire and police departments, and public works improvements, the casino developers said.

WoooooHooooo, another casino to go steal peoples money, just what people need in a bad economy. Get em hooked and make em broke.

Don't think 16mil is even close to what they should be paying. That is definitely not enough money to combat the increase in crime brought on by the casino.

Cheaters snared by shared casino security

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) -- The man at the poker table had a ball cap pulled down almost to his nose, but his glance up at a television screen revealed a familiar face to Mohegan Sun's surveillance cameras: A photograph of the known card cheater had been sent by bulletin to casinos around the country.

Within hours, the bettor was arrested, accused of marking cards with invisible ink.

"The officer who identified him, basically she had a 'Holy crap!' moment," said Jay Lindroos, the casino's surveillance director. "She saw the face and said, 'I recognize that guy!'"

Foxwoods Mall Announces Major Stores
List Includes American Eagle Outfitters, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, LOFT, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger

MASHANTUCKET — American Eagle Outfitters, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Brooks Brothers are among the major stores signed up for a shopping mall to be built at Foxwoods Resort Casino, the developers announced Thursday.

The development company, Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc., also named Calvin Klein, Coach, Fossil, Gap, LOFT, Michael Kors, Nike, Skechers, Steve Madden and Tommy Hilfiger on the list of retailers — a list expected to grow to about 80 stores.

The $115 million Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods could be open for holiday shopping in 2014 or by the following spring, Tanger chief Steven B. Tanger said.

Most of the stores named Thursday already have a presence at either Tanger's outlet mall in Westbrook or at Clinton Crossing, operated by Premium Outlets. Just one — Steve Madden, the shoe and accessory store will be new to Connecticut.

Foxwoods,MGM announce end to licensing agreement

Mashantucket — Foxwoods Resort Casino is parting company with Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts International, announcing the end of the licensing agreement that enabled Foxwoods to brand its second casino tower MGM Grand at Foxwoods.

The parties have agreed on a six-month period for Foxwoods to "transition" from use of the brand, which features a roaring lion's head logo.

"Neither party expects a material impact due to the end of the agreement," the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which owns Foxwoods, said in a statement released Friday at the end of the business day.

The tribe and MGM — then known as MGM Mirage — signed the agreement in 2006, at a time when both were eager to pursue gaming opportunities in the Northeast. MGM Grand, built next to the tribe's Foxwoods Resort Casino complex at a cost of more than $700 million, opened in May 2008 just as the effects of the Great Recession were beginning to be felt.

Mass takes Votes Today On Mohegan Sun Casino

By MATTHEW STURDEVANT
REVERE, Mass. — Voters have their say Tuesday on Mohegan Sun's proposal to build a $1.3 billion casino at Suffolk Downs race track in this city on Boston's North Shore.

If approved, Mohegan Sun will square off against Las Vegas tycoon Steve Wynn, who wants to build a $1.3 billion casino in neighboring Everett. Only one will receive the sole license to operate a resort casino in the Boston area.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will decide which plan is better this spring. Last June, 87 percent of Everett voters approved Wynn's plan.

Mohegan Sun Massachusetts plans to build on 42 acres now occupied by horse stables at one end of the racetrack. The tribe promises to deliver 2,500 construction jobs and 4,000 permanent jobs.

Revere, Mass., Approves Mohegan Sun's Plan For $1.3 Billion Casino

REVERE, Mass. — Mohegan Sun's plans for a $1.3 billion casino at Suffolk Downs racetrack passed by a wide margin Tuesday, capturing 63 percent of a citywide vote.

With all 21 precincts reporting, the unofficial tally was 7,169 in favor, 4,172 against.

Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority CEO Mitchell Etess said the vote said a lot about the people of Revere. They turned out in greater numbers and offered a wider margin of support despite better organized opposition now than before a similar vote in November.
