OK, I raise this topic separately as I was going ballistic at work today, and after.

I had FIVE spam texts from Coral(where I haven't had an account for 6 years, and that was before my current mobile number!) within 3 hours, the texts did NOT mention Coral until in desperation I replied 'STOP' to the number 66066. I received an immediate reply stating 'Coral will send no more texts from now'.

This was after the THIRD text this morning. I also replied 'STOP' after the fifth. Since then I have the same text twice more. It's relentless.

I had to turn off my phone.

Anyone?? Rep??

I got the same all morning, must be about a dozen texts and I eventually blocked the number. I had an account at corals in the past, but it must be at least 5 years since I closed it. And as with you, I had no idea it was Coral texting until I read your post.

How did you block it? I have an app which blocks nuisance phone numbers and sends them straight to answer which kills them off, but spam texts?

I think you'll find it's a concealed number and 66066 is simply the umbrella number for a group of affiliate spammers, in other words a marketing firm with Corals as a customer.

It needs to be stopped, it's harassment....

On the I-phone theres an option to block calls and texts from a number, I just used that and presume it has worked as I had a lot of texts before i blocked and nothing since.

Good to see Coral and other casinos safeguarding our personal information, especially given how some have closed their accounts years ago. It warms the cockles of my heart.

I dread to think how many places I registered at in my haste, and how many I wish I hadn't. Worrying how Coral choose to ignore your request to stop with their spamming antics, no doubt half of my private details have traversed across China, Russia and the general worldwide web.

I still receive regular updates from casinos I haven't touched in years, mind you, I just insta- delete and move on. This is NOT a good way to get rid of them permanently, I really ought to look at this method more closely :(

This is not just annoying, it's illegal, and Corals is a UK company, not some clip joint out of reach of UK jurisdiction. The "stop" command is irrelevant, they should not even have STARTED sending these, nor should they have concealed their identity unless people sent "stop" back.

If this has been widespread, Corals will probably get a mildly slapped wrist for this, which illustrates another problem, the laws may be there, but the punishment is hardly a deterrent.

An interesting read. It's a spamming (marketing company) Coral use apparently, as I suggested.

I hope these pieces of crap Coral are FINED INTO OBLIVION for this. It is unacceptable, people have been turning phones off and missing out on important stuff, if OFCOM don't bend them over and fire a huge one up their ass for this I for one will want to know WHY?

Not that impressed.

It seems clear that this is their own internal service, not something they have contracted to a third party, yet they have not registered this number honestly as belonging to Coral, but have created another company to "front" it's registration. The returns are also full of "........ has not provided this information" when people try to look up who is behind this number so that they can make a formal complaint.

Hiding behind a front is a well known loophole in our current regulatory systems, as recipients are not allowed to register a complaint unless they are able to identify the company that sent the message or called them.

If Coral were doing this honestly, it would have been a simple matter for recipients to discover everything they needed to know about who was sending these texts, and if necessary provide all the information required in order to submit an official complaint.

Their apologies also don't explain why non account holders are getting these texts, they are pretending this is a system that sends promotions to their regular customers that has misfired dozens of texts when only one should have gone out.

No, it ISN'T Coral directly Vinyl - they are simply carrying the can to divert from the fact they use third-party (spammers) marketing companies to maintain a layer between themselves and OFCOM.

ANY spam text will come with a similar cover number, like 77766, 76667 etc. Cassava/888 (secretslots) have been battering UK mobile subscribers via one of these firms/numbers, and I actually lodged a ICO complaint before they stopped.

What a f***ing day this has been! Just got a spam text from 44(0)7909256999 and yes!!!! After months of e-mail filth from Casino Rewards, they have finally gotten my mobile number and it's a promo from 'Luxury Casino'........

Got an email from Coral about the text that was sent ( below) - and I never realised I had self excluded, i thought i had merely closed my account.

Today, we experienced a serious technical issue and you may have received multiple SMS communications.

Despite this error, your coral.co.uk account remains self-excluded and you will not receive any further marketing communications from us. We would like to assure you that your account remained frozen at all times and will remain so.

We would like to sincerely apologise for this technical error and assure you that we continue to take your data security and preferences very seriously, and that we will take all necessary steps to ensure that this error cannot be repeated.

Kind regards,

The Team @Coral

Now this poses an interesting question for me. If I am self excluded from Corals, why are they giving my details to a third party to send me marketing texts? I would have thought that Corals would have a more robust system in place if accounts are self excluded?

This BS "Incentivated Limited has not provided this information " should have been robustly dealt with BEFORE this number malfunctioned. Provision of such information should be mandatory before a service number is allowed to be let loose on the public.

This whole affair throws up numerous inconsistencies.

If this is Coral, then of course they have the contact details of everyone, even self excluded accounts. However, if this is a third party, there is no legitimate reason for the contact number for a self excluded account ever having been passed over, hence this malfunction should never have caused messages to have been sent to those who have self excluded.

If this is a third party, Coral have sorted the problem out FAR TOO QUICKLY. The speed with which they dealt with this suggests that the whole thing was internal to Coral, and they had immediate and direct access to the software in order to effect a fix.

Nothing of course explains how the malfunction could POSSIBLY send messages to people who have never had Coral accounts in the first place, or who have obtained a new number since, and not given this to Coral.

Hi all,

I've pinged our teams internally to get more information about this issue. I will post shortly once I've had a reply. At the moment this is the first I've actually heard about it but wanted you all to know I'm looking into this.

Thanks

Anthony

Hi all,

We (Coral) sincerely apologise to all affected yesterday by the technical error experienced with SMS messages.

Anthony

You will hopefully be apologizing to the ICO and/or OFCOM too.

So, WHO actually sent them - you or a third-party spammer/marketing operation?

WHY were you also including SELF-EXCLUDED ex-players in this bombardment of spam, in breach of UKGC rules??

You need to elaborate a bit IMO. A one-line apology pasted rom Tw*tter doesn't cut it.

I imagine them into a laboratory, with phones instead of phials,

- We did it Pinky! We discovered SMS texting to send promotions to our players! Now we can take over the world!
- That's great, Brain! What does this button do?
=Send Message to All Players?=
- Don't touch that!
- Too late

censored

:axeman2:

LE: On a more serious note, what they did is awful, it's just like giving to a sober guy that went through years of AA meetings and other therapies, a bottle of Jack Daniels and told him to start drinking again...

I agree....and we're still awaiting an explanation 24 hours on.
