Hi, I have been set a challenge to do a Classical music show tomorrow on our local community radio 2pm - 4pm UK time. I am no expert on Classical music. Am working on my playlist at the moment. So far I've chosen some music by Debussey, Mozart, Chopin, Bach & Philip Glass. I am also going to add musical scores from movies which I like. I'm also adding another twist in that there are a number of electronic artists whose music I feel would be good on a classical show, such as one or two tracks by artists such as Cafe Del Mar, Orbital, FSOL & Hybrid.

Anyway does anyone have any suggestions, some classical music you love, I'm trying to listen to us much as I can for tomorrow & educate myself in it. I'm nervous as Hell cause classical music is something I don't really listen to that much. I was set the challenge to see if it would help me appreciate the genre more, which to be truthful definately has, I'm really enjoying putting this playlist together.

Anyway if anyone has any suggestions of classical music that would be good on a radio show, any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

You have such a magnificant and wide choice here, and in that I include some of the more recent and often very majestic movie themes that have been crafted.

Because musical choice is such a subjective issue I have no doubt you will be bombarded by opinions - possibly some quite rude - on your selection, but that's OK too. I find that reading up on the background to a particular piece of classical music gives it more relevance and life for me.

Anyway, enough chatter - here are a few of my faves:

    Luigi Boccherini's Minuet #6

    Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

Concerto for Horn and Orchestra No 1 in D

    Brahms' Hungarian Dance #5

    Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance

    Habanera from Bizet's opera Carmen

    Tchsikovsky's 1812

Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring by Bach

Verdi - lots of Verdi - including Aida Grand March, Las Traviata Brindisi, and chorus of the slaves from Nambucco

Jupiter from The Planets by Holst

Tochata in Fugue D Minor from Bach

Handel's Hallelujah chorus from the Messiah; his Zadok the Priest coronation anthem and the fun of The Royal Fireworks La Rejouissance.

Just want to say thanks, your suggestions were a big help. Apart from some terrible pronunciation by me of se of the tracks & artists live on air, the show today was a success. I got a lot of good feedback from listeners & will be doing another classical show next Monday.

Really enjoyed it actually, more than I thought I would. It certainly opened my eyes to the classical genre & I am completely hooked on it now :)
