Max there is nothing cryptic about it. If your serious about addressing the issues in this site then addressing the post and not the poster would be recognised in any language

I repeat, if the poster is the problem then banging on about individual posts is missing the point.

Most people are generally willing to respect the site rules and if they suddenly happen to screw up, no problem: you point out the issue, they respect -- or at least abide by -- what you have to say, and it's usually "job done".

Example: regular member posts now and again, suddenly one post is way off. You bring it up, the problem goes away, forum life goes on. Obviously addressing the post in this case was exactly the right thing to do.

Once in a while though someone is dead set against respecting the site rules, for reasons best known to themselves I suppose. In any case those situations -- once they've revealed themselves to be such which usually takes some time -- require a very different approach.

Example: forum member repeatedly posts objectionable material, be it abuse of other forum members or whatever, basically Forum Rules violations over and over again. Warnings don't work, Infractions don't work, temporary bans don't work, taking the person aside and explaining that the way things are going is not going to end well doesn't work either.

So this is clearly not a problem of this post or that post. This is a problem of said person having no respect for the rules, showing no intention of ever doing so, and basically telling you -- the forum management -- to get stuffed. Since this is not an "address the post" situation treating it as if it were would be a massive time suck and, ultimately, a recipe for an ulcer for the simple reason that it's never going to work: the person knows full well what you are asking of them, they just choose to ignore it.

Here, unfortunately, the poster is the problem and dealing with that head-on is pretty much the only thing that's going to keep the peace and -- also very important -- keep them from poisoning the site with their disruptive BS. At best one can say that the site and said person aren't a good match for each other and it would probably be best if they found somewhere else to be who they want to be.

Think of it like a bunch of people in a bar: if one of them insists on being abusive and disruptive and won't listen to requests that they dial it down -- basically showing no interest in behaving in a socially acceptable manner -- then escorting them to the door is probably the best thing.

Different problems, different solutions. It's the way of the world and forum management is no different.

Many of us are guilty of it. Baiting,belittling,trolling and inciting animosity would largely be eradicated if an attack the post and not the poster rule was applied.
That would make the forum a much friendlier and safer place to post in.

The problem has not gone away, though things do seem a bit politer in the NK thread atm, but time and again shows some people [a few] just have no self-control if they disagree with a viewpoint, and will make things personal deliberately with malice intended.

I understand it's not always an easy balance to strike between members having free expression and pulling them up on things, but GC's example above is a classic, there is clear intention to demean and provoke/ goading.

It is a pretty simple rule that would not take too much enforcing once everybody got the message. It is a permanent fix that would see both old and new posters increase traffic
A short ban to cool off for any member who knows the rules and breaks them and longer for repeated offenders. It will soon stop.

That's a real shame if you think this restricts your posting so much that you have to leave, I have never put you on ignore as have enjoyed most of the debates/discussions we had, [and just reading your posts in general across the board's topics] but there has to be a certain amount of civility if you disagree with someone.

Harry contributes and has contributed much more than me, across all sorts of topics, even though we disagree a fair bit, I wouldn't want him to leave at all.
