Bovada Check Clears But Now Was Told Its Invalid

I recently got an international check from Bovada. I deposit it in my bank and it clears the next business day.

Two days later Bovada sent me an email stating there was an error and the check can not be cashed. I'm confused as it already cleared in my bank and the funds are avaialble for use.

Can a check that clears, then bounce sometime later?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Yeah it can happen.. Lot of times when you have a good relationship with the bank, they will credit you checks within one business day, and then send them out for clearing…. So might take up to two weeks for them to come back.

When it comes back, just make a scan of the check and a copy of your statement where it shows the returned item fee. Anywhere from $10 to $35 depending on the bank.. Send off to Bovada And thell make good on it

Here's a look at the other side of what could happen to the OP.

An international check was deposited and it comes back bad. Banks don't really care why it's not going to be honored. It's not gonna cash, it's bad and it's international to boot. So now they go back to the account holder. There is a good possiblity that the bank will look at this check as fraudulent which is a whole nother ball of wax for the account holder. If they don't have a good, lengthy association with this bank, their account could be closed.

So now what do you tell the bank? Because they are going to question you unless it's a small bank and you know everyone working there.

Seems like I have read more than once about Bovada sending bad checks.

Why?

Why is anyone from the USA still taking checks from any casino regardless of whether it is accredited or not? I haven't taken a check from a casino since last year after I had one bounce and another actually be denied depositing into either one of my separate (different banks) bank accounts.

Anyone in the USA should be extremely careful taking a check on a Canadian bank. They are being returned and being denied more often than not lately. It has happened twice to me. This is when I stopped taking checks from any casino, since they are drawn on Canadian banks. There are other options to withdraw. Demand getting paid by wire transfer/ WU etc...It is your money and you should have the right to withdraw the way you choose. Any casino worth playing at should honor this request if they want to keep you playing.

I have had to request withdawal options that were not offered in the casino and I was approved and recieved funds in just a few days.

Please stop taking checks people if you are in the USA. Ultimately, It will bite you in the end as it did me. Took 3 months to fix the mess, but got paid by my choice of payment which was NOT offered in the banking window.

Very good post Silc.

US players need to start asserting themselves more. Casinos have had ample time to sort it out.

I'm kinda surprised that the larger operations haven't created their own ewallet or some kind of debit card attached to the casino account I.e. when the cashout is approved, you're able to transfer the funds to the ewallet yourself or to a different section of the cashier where you can withdraw via any ATM right away. The casino could charge a fee to cover costs which would be less than wires and courier cheques and certainly worth it just to stop the headaches.

I really feel for our US members. I think I would just stop playing. I certainly wouldd not be paying $58 to deposit $40 like I read the other day....you're behind the 8-ball before you start.

I've often wondered whether it would be worth some US members here forming a "buying group" like in the commercial world. You could guarantee a minimum value of deposits per week across the group, in return for better terms such as WU withdrawals etc, and maybe even better promotions and stuff. As a casino owner, I would snap to attention if 20-50+ players offered to play at my casino every week in return for something that isn't that difficult or expensive. You could have member requirements like 1 yr active CM membership, and democratic processes to approve new members.

Certainly, a united front is miles better than one lone voice, and it might just save a lot of players a lot of money and hassle.

If it were me, I would give it a shot at least.

It's a very risky affair as they can end up in court (and ultimately in jail) simply for running such operation (even as a 3rd party). That's why payment processors for most US facing casinos are "fly-by-nights" and can't be trusted.

Excellent point, Nifty.

It would be nice if casinos that want US money would try to help us get paid. Instead some of them act like they don't even know you anymore.

That's why I rarely if at all play at casinos anymore. I make small deposits and if I get a chance to cash out, which I haven't, I'm not having it sent back to my bank. I want a moneygram or western union payment. I'm too paranoid about getting paid and don't want to make large deposits as it's not worth the risk or stress.

Geez, I still remember the good old days. Vip at platinum play..ease of deposit, request a withdrawal and the ach was in my bank account the next business day. It's like playing russian roulette with your money now.

From the outside, it seems odd how the US banks "freak out" over banks from their neighbours, Canada. It would be like a French bank not trusting anything that came from a German bank, even though the two countries are often seen as the "backbone" of the whole EU movement.

US/Canada are about as close as you can get as far as 2 distinct countries can go. Much closer than France/Germany actually as we share the same language, same food, same people, etc. When you cross the border, you barely feel like you're in another country. That said, US banks aren't afraid of Canadian banks, they are afraid of foreign money from unknown sources. That's fairly recent and part of some anti-terrorism measures. Back when I was living in Florida, I was able to cash out checks that were written in French from Canadian banks. All I had to do was to write "USD" (by hand) on them and I'd cash them for the full amount directly in USD, no question asked.

I don't think I'd be able to do that anymore.

Back before 911, and the requirements for passports moving across the border, cheques from US people and visa versa were not uncommon.

But that was before the ease of electronic banking and it's rare for anyone in Canada to write a personal cheque or deposit one anymore

The DOJ doesn't want Canada to facilitate US gaming, and the processors that do may not face prosecution in our country, but they have faced seizures (Ewallet Express sound familiar?).

EWX was huge, now there are smaller eggs in more baskets.

I thinks somewhere between when the cheque was issued and it was cashed, an issue arose.

Bovada let the customer know, but perhaps too late. Their reputation is good, if there are bounced cheque fees, they will probably cover them, I sure would ask.

No one in the US should be gambling out of their day-to-day life account.

I'm a landlord, and most of my rents are not paid by cheque. I can cash any cheque up to a grand on my account without a hold, but if I had bounced cheques, that might change. It did almost 20 years ago, when I had a bad tenant.

While a deposit might be released immediately if you have a good standing with your bank, it doesn't really mean it cleared.

Surely the source is a Canadian bank. Canada are likely to be implementing their own measures to ensure that "unknown" money can't use the Canadian banking systems to get cleaned up. It seems to be an isolationist policy of the US that will be impacting commerce in general, not just gambling and terrorism. Is gambling really such a huge problem that such "sledgehammer" measures are needed despite the potential for "collateral damage"?

It also seems that bank wires are being hit, even though this is now how most commerce payments are made. Players seem to be resorting to checks because bank wires are not working.

In the UK, we have the freedom to move our money offshore and back again, spend it offshore, even on the internet. We are not prevented from doing this, but we must declare any relevant gains to the tax authorities, and take reasonable care to ensure we don't get involved in something dodgy. Customs will confiscate anything bought from offshore that is not legal to own in the UK, and duty will be charged on many other items originating from outside the EU.

The US authorities are also hypocrites. The US will allow one of their businesses to sell something over the internet to a UK citizen, even though UK law prohibits it's import or ownership by an individual. They are doing what Canada is doing to them in not preventing their banks from processing transactions to the US that are legal in Canada, but illegal in the US.

For the US, the terrorists have won in a way, having deprived the US citizen of many freedoms they once enjoyed in the name of "national security". Even in the UK a few former freedoms have disappeared.

Bovada

This entire thread is very interesting.
I won and requested a cashout of $2,305.00 from Bovada 3 days ago. They sent me an e-mail confirming the wd has already been processed by check as I requested. I have not had any problems with cashing Bovada checks in the past (except that it took over a month to receive the check last time...about 6 months ago). I have yet to receive a tracking number from Bovada.

After reading all of the above I am hoping all will go smoothly.

I feel like a shill sometimes, but I play at the Sloto (deckmedia) group exclusively, for a number of reasons:

  • RTG (for their tournaments, I kind of hate rtg) and Rival platforms - two of each (Slotocash rtg, Slots Capital rival/Desert Nights rtg & rival)
  • Reliable, friendly CSR's, with Ms Sloto here as backup should you need it
  • Accredited across the board
  • Wire transfer withdrawals which are reasonably fast (to excruciatingly slow) and FREE if you withdraw over 350 for US, 100 for other countries
  • Wire transfer withdrawals can be made under the above limits for a fee (ask a CSR what they are, I've never done it)
  • W/U withdrawals on request (not sure about the fees there)
  • Minimal over-charges on deposits (which I hate, but .75 isn't going to break me of this dumb hobby)

They're a solid group, and if their games feel tighter than other outfits, well... that's gaming, and there's probably a reason they're solid enough to actually pay you when you win.

I asked for the payout on April 25th and rceived the check via courier today May 3rd. Deposited the ck today via atm and hoping all goes well.

p.s.
The win was almost all from playing craps though I did have a little luck with video poker to start the run.

I started this post and still have not received my reissued check. This started on 4/16 and still waiting now on 5/10. I did have a check withdraw before this and it went fine.

Nice win

You deposited the first cheque, did you hear anything back from your bank regarding it? It's only been about three weeks, it might still be returned, especially if Bovada told you it was not good.

It's disgraceful they have not been in better communication with you.

Yikes. Makes you wonder what "precaution" they were looking at. It's such a relatively small sum, you would hope it wasn't an issue to have sufficient funds in a account. Were they worried that processor was doing a runner? Under investigation, and wanted to halt activities? Unless the casino would like to offer an explanation, guess speculation is our only option

That cheque probably came out of their account weeks ago, it's a disgrace to have left the player hanging like this without communication.

Just a reminder to players to not use household accounts for gambling, especially in the United States. And to allow ample time for cheques to clear if you won't easily be able to pay it back immediately should a cheque turn out to be no good.

The first thing you can do is not post information like that. Edit your post and remove the bank information.

The second thing you can do is deposit the check. If you don't like depositing checks, then why on earth did you request one.

Actually last I knew, if you deposit by credit card they force you to take a check.
They won't allow you to do a wire transfer, western union, or even a money gram.
The only way they'll let you do a wire is if you deposit via wire, or if you want cash, you have to deposit with cash.
It was one of Bovada's silly rules if you asked me.
