Betting Shops set to reopen

You're ironically calling it fake news.

Ive been on calls all morning, England betting shops will begin to reopen from the 15th (but only when all requirements for social distancing have been satisfied)

Ok but many newspapers this morning say betting specifically closed until July so this must be a new development. Cheers for confirming though.

No worries. Like i said its England only - the other countries have to decide when is right.

At a guesstimate retail wont be in full swing again til early July.

Something that just crossed my mind when reading this. It made me think how one would set future dates for places to reopen.

It can only be based on the way figures seem to be trending but that is no guarantee they will continue to trend that way. Given the possibility things could stay pretty much the same, then why not open now?

These people who set these dates must expect us to believe they are capable of predicting the future. Thinking along those lines, what would make entering a betting shop in a few weeks time any safer than entering one today? Other than the number of new cases, will hopefully be lower, the answer is nothing.

Given that places were ordered to close, when there were far less daily cases, it does beg the question of how is it safe to reopen them when there are more? Also what is the magical figure of daily cases that determines open or closed? There isn’t one, it’s all based on assumption, just ‘willy-nilly’ decisions without any knowledge of what the likely outcome will be.

Like everyone, I really want to get back to normality ASAP but easing restrictions prematurely could be fatal mistake imo because if there is a second wave (and nobody can guarantee there won’t be) and we have to lockdown again, it could be for a lot longer because nobody will want the responsibility of coming out of a second one too early.

What’s the old adage? Be careful what you wish for.

I also note that amusement arcades are on various lists of those said to be opening from 15th.

We’ve all seen how busy the beaches are surely it’s a ridiculous idea to allow these people access to the arcades??

Yes they’ll say only if people are distant etc etc plus you’d have to have people cleaning machines after every player has left a machine or teddy grabber or coin pusher!! Surely this just wouldn’t be allowed??? Would be crazy if it were!!!

Until I hear it directly from the government I’m dubious about these stories.

IMO it’s idiotic to even consider the above let alone go through with it.

This is a valid point, all the social distancing stuff that is being put in only mitigates anything.

I think we have to live with the fact that there will never be zero risk (there never was before either) - we have to either adapt to the new normal, or just never go anywhere until the disease is gone. Its up to your own personal choice, there isnt a right or wrong answer.

I think these gaming machines are easy targets.

I'll reverse this and ask you.

Tesco, Asda or who ever, all have Self Service check out machines, right? and have throughout this whole pandemic.

How many times have you seen them cleaned when you've been to the supermarket? (Im going to guess its zero) We just have to ask customers to sanitize and clean their hands before using. "Nudge behaviours" is the new term.... (and staff will clean them often)

In the case of seaside arcades I don't see how they can be opened safely. Kids are touching everything and would be impossible to clean. It's different to a self service checkout (which are cleaned regularly in the supermarkets I use) as how often do you actually touch them? Maybe the screen a couple of times to press pay then card. Kids hang over the penny pushers, sit on rides, jump from one to another.
High street arcades would be easier, they don't get that busy (round here anyway) and they could either remove some of the less profitable machines to create more space, or install screens. Even the ones in the city centre are busy if they have a dozen people in, it wouldn't be that hard for staff to quickly wipe the buttons or screen down after people move off them.
In our arcades I would guess its at least 80% of pensioners playing Bar X who go in anyway, so chances are they will be a lot quieter than usual, making it even easier to keep safe.

I agree with that, im not totally sure what 'arcades' means anyway in regards to June 15th, are we talking AGC's or the seaside ones? Seaside ones can be huge, so would be difficult to manage.

About as clear as mud!

With regards to the SS epos terminals in Tesco, it depends really. If you buy fruit and veg that needs to be weighed, or some crusty rolls, you may end up pressing it 10/12 times before leaving - and there is always a queue behind you, right?

An SSBT can be used once and then not again for a couple hours....

I’ve not seen my Mrs for nearly 3 months!!

How could it be ok to open up amusement arcades that with the exception of a few teddy machines on the outside, are all 95% indoors allow numerous people inside but yet I can’t sit in the girlfriends back garden for the first time in ages and sit apart having a drink or one of us cooking a few burgers on the bbq?

Ive still yet to see anything official so I’ll I’ll be amazed if this is the case.

If it is then I’ll just pull a Dominic and to hell with the rules!!!

It was released on Monday night with the governments new process for "non-essential retail" from the 15th June which includes "shops and branches" which includes "betting shops & arcades"

I think thats pretty official!

There are loads of non essential shops opening then.
Do what you think is right and safe for your family, Cummings has pretty much torn the rule book up anyway.

I'm not worried. At the local arcade, Sharon and her cleaning spray of doom hover like an ever-present predator, ready to move in for the kill a nanosecond after a machine is vacated. This was before the Coronavirus. The Boss hates finger marks and dust on the chrome. With a net worth of over £25m, he can afford the OCD levels of cleaning in his "family run" chain of amusements.

When he said the Mrs, I presumed he was talking about Bonanza so the only thing booming will be the overdraft charges.
