David Carruthers, the former chief executive of online sports wagering company BetOnSports, has been jailed for 33 months after pleading guilty to racketeering and conspiracy charges, said the US Justice Department.

The charges, linked to the company's operations in the US, where internet gambling is illegal, followed a government crackdown on offshore online gambling sites that violate US laws by taking wagers from Americans. BetOnSports took in $3.5bn (2.2bn) between 2002 and 2004,

I wish reporters would quit *#@&$@ saying that taking bets from Americans is illegal. It is NOT. In some states it is, but not for all of America. The main reason Carruthers is in jail now is because they took bets over the PHONE which is indeed illegal due to the wire act.
