Betat Maintenance?

I hope they are back tomorrow as we have a public holiday in Thailand and hence i got even more time on hand.

On a different note, i am not the brightest computer geek nor do i have great in depth software knowledge. Hence could one of you wizzkids out there explain how these criminals make money with a DDoS.

My logical knowledge would tell me that something initiated by some bright humans can be stopped by a brighter human and i suppose online casinos employ a few of those wonderkids. Or am i thinking to naive about this???

I am no expert either but to answer your question. They don't make money out of it directly only if sites they attack pay them to stop the attacks. A lot of these attacks are down to blackmail or a personal vendetta against a site.

Think of all the sites anonymous has hacked or took offline for a while.

These attacks are difficult to stop as no matter how good your defences are at stopping your site being attacked and hacked into its a lot more difficult to stop a DDOS attack because of the size of it. Many huge companies including sony, neteller, and even government sites have been took down by these attacks.

I don't understand much about these things either but they're criminals, I read the links very interesting.

I never heard of such a thing before until now and what is 10btc? I am clueless I know but angry for doing that to one of my favorite Casinos.

I will be depositing my money at Slotty and Betat when they're are back and I don't care if I lose as they have lost enough already I'm sure. :(

Just received the email explaining what happened. Would be nice to see the scum behind these and the other DDoS attack back in April up in court and subsequently locked up.

Always so cocky and full of themselves when they're behind a computer screen/keyboard.

That is a lot of money.

Yes it is. Might not be much for BetAt.... BUT danger is they pay this and then the crooks wants more and more :( That is why its good that BetAt take the fight up with them and will not surrender. Instead they intense their security even more to prevent it.

But then again this is also very expensive for them and a shame for such a nice casino. Can only fear for all the others as well and now in December christmas month with all these different promotions.

So sorry to hear this was supose to deposit on betat friday after work but got busy, and i have an pending withdrawal aswell now i dont know if i wanna withdraw. Scumbags online...

I just received the email also.

Sorry if it's a stupid question but... Is my personnal info and banking info compromised?
The goal of an attack like this is to put their servers down only? Or to steal private info about their customers too?

If I remember correctly its not the first time I hear about these attacks... I dont remember the casinos that were attacked though....

Good luck to betat....

Got the email with a link to FAQ, but this link is not working (page not available). Anybody else with same problem?

Hey Fleur,

the link should be linking to Outdated URL (Invalid) or Outdated URL (Invalid)

you should be able to log into your account from there and see the FAQ section and contact forms for various things. We just got the account data back online so we can let people use the login. Putting it all back together from backups is taking time - but at least we know that all players will be safe.

To answer someone's question here - DDoS is used to force us to pay so we do not lose more money by staying shut every day. Usually sites slow down to the point of not being usable due to slow response, but we have a fail safe system that terminates service completely, in order to protect your data. I explained how it works back in April. Your data is 100% safe. We just cant put our operations back online quickly, that's all.

As for withdrawals, we're extracting backed up data now and starting to process all pending withdrawals manually as we do not want to damage anyone's Xmas shopping plans - its a sensitive time for people and someones winnings can mean presents for the entire family.

We'll keep you updated from time to time, but please know that we are doing our utmost to get this done - and get it done right. Each failure is a lesson.

Thank you

Thanks for taking the time to answer Igor. I really wish these scumbags die. I will be back on betat when it's back online. I hope this problem doesnt mess up your christmas.

This reminds me of Street Fighter 2 back in the day, you'd always get some opponent who'd corner you and spam you relentlessly with a flurry of attacks that did small amounts of damage despite blocking! Namely E Honda, Blanka, Bison.....

Game-related metaphors aside, this new wave of criminals are lame-ass punks who have no style. Bit like the aforementioned button- mashing cheesemongers, their time could be better served doing something CONSTRUCTIVE with their 'talents' a la Anonymous, who at least try to help fight crime! (recently anyway).

Unfortunately cyber- hacking is rife and all companies will be targetted in some capacity. At least Betat will try to beef up their protection unlike so many of the multi- billion dollar companies like Natwest, Sony, Microsoft, BT etc who basically cannot be arsed to implement any safeguards within their creaking firewalls.

It pains me to see a good brand like Betat go down for a while (got the email too) but I'm sure they'll emerge stronger for it. Glad they have not given in to any demands and are seeing it through, hope to see them back soon

I am afraid both of the above links are not working for me. Could it be due to my location?

Thanks, PM received safely. Actually, I was never able to connect to betatcasino.com before (used betat.co.uk instead), so that might be the reason. Wishing you luck with fixing this ugly issue...

I read an interesting book once on these gangster style extortion attempts. It details a guy who was hired by Canbet to try and secure their systems against it, and the company he set up to do just that.

It's called "Fatal System Error" and is still in print. Probably a bit boring unless you are interested in this sort of stuff but it explained a bit about it all to me. It is out of date now. The attacks detailed are in 2003-2005 kind of time. Stuff like send $6000 to Russia via Western Union or we keep your website down.

I have been gambling online long time and these extortion attempts have been going on as long as I remember. Pretty much every major company seems to have been hit at some point.
