My thoughts exactly.
I should have gone to bed a couple of hours ago - now I have to go with this sad thought in my head.
Like many others - I loved him (as an actor) very much. :(

I just caught this on the news, I don't usually follow or pay attention to the private life of celebrities so it was news to me when they mentioned that he was suffering from depression and alcoholism. Just goes to show that all the money and fame in the world may not make your life better.

Interesting that someone just posted a scene from 'The Fisher King' here a few days ago.

Granted. I feel an actor is no better nor worse than you or I, (we've all our demons and good deeds) and their job, as actors, and by default their celebrity status, has no more importance nor merit, than, say, my accountant....some perform well, some fall short.

I happened to mention this one (Robin Williams), as (IMHO), his offerings were vast and talent unique and there will be, sadly, a hole within his field, unlikely to be filled or duplicated.

There are many things in life that happen, however this one truly shocked me. My heart goes out to his family. They have lost a good man. He was truly one of my favorite actors. An original and there will never be another like him. Class act all the way. He had issues however he tried hard to fight them. I am glad that he will be forever remembered for all his great works of art.

May my GOD hold you in the palm of his hand.

I agree - he had a truly unique way of making people laugh and could do improv comedy like no other I can recall, as well as being a convincing actor.

I'm sure most folks will be saddened by his loss at a relatively young 63 years of age...I certainly am.

RIP

The saddest thing is that there are so many people that suffer depression. I had a very close friend take his life two years ago. You would have never expected anything like this to happen. People who suffer inside will usually hide it - and then it's too late. What a shame - what a tragedy.

Others have pretty much said what needs to be said: shock, tragedy, loss.

All I'll say is that some people are the bright lights of humanity -- we all have our own -- and Robin Williams was one of mine. The world is paler, thinner place when they leave us. And so it feels today.

A joke dedicated to Robin Williams:
A man goes to see a doctor.

Doctor asks what seems to be the trouble.
The man says, "Doc, I'm depressed. Simply, I can't sleep sometimes, I can't eat, I feel down and irritable most days. I just can't feel 'happy.'"

The Doctor says, "I've got the perfect fix for you. In town tonight is the great clown Pagliacci. He's hysterically funny and will make you laugh til you cry. You will experience a joy unprecedented."

The man bursts into tears. The doctor, confused asks why. "Doc, I am Pagliacci."

RIP Robin Williams, you will definitely be missed by countless people all around the world.

so sad

I just seen it on the net when I got home tonight....it said suicide and I still can't believe that. looked for it on the news but not much, but confirmed here that it was suicide....oh shit so sad day. brings a tear to think that someone can be that alone or sad. I am crying right now. rest your brain robin

It is truly sad.

I met him once in a New York deli during the filming of The Fisher King. The cashier screwed up his order and he smiled and was so patient with him. He had the kindest smile.

Such a tragic loss.

I believe when one has made their mind up, it is a huge relief has they feel they have a way out of their depression, which of course is final.

An ex-boyfriend years ago took his life...but before just a few hours earlier, people that saw him said he was exceptionally happy and upbeat.

RIP Robin. We all love you.

I generally process 'celebrity' deaths quite quickly.
After all I don't know them personally, there are so many other world problems to be concerned about etc etc.

But nonetheless I'm finding a few days later that the death of Robin Williams still has me feeling shaken up. That there's a real resonance there.

Partly that's because I think that under all the clowning there was a lot of pathos and meaning in his performances, which spoke to me and taught me things particularly when I was younger.
He seemed to be able to offer a quite unique combination of trustworthy guide to some of life's darker experiences but also a reminder of the magic and sparkle of the world. Its possibilities..

On the other hand if there's one 'useful' thing to come from this week, it's that the subject of depression has been discussed more widely on social media etc than ever before.
I've been shocked by some of the ignorance of the issue that has been unearthed, including sections of the media here in the UK.
e.g. The comments made by TalkSport senior presenter Alan Brazil (no sympathy for selfish suicide etc) made me feel ashamed to be Scottish actually.

Yesterday, Robin Williams' widow shared with the world that Robin had been recently diagnosed with onset Parkinson's Disease and had not been ready to make that information public.

I cannot imagine how that diagnosis would affect a performer of Robin's stature. To know that within a relatively short period of time the physical body that had always served him and his art so well would no longer function as usual.

Aside from substance abuse being the cause for depression, I would think that knowing his body would no longer function as it always had, well that might have been too painful or impossible to face.

People who spent time with Robin the last few days of his life remarked how happy and calm he was. Who will ever know why he decided to end his life under his own terms. He might have been relieved his decision to end his life was better than living a life where he could no longer be the Robin Williams we all knew and loved.

Youtube RObin Williams and Koko the Gorilla I defy any of you not to shed a tear at how beautiful this video is! Robin treats the animal just like a person and befriends it quickly you can see how genuine, caring and interested he is in KOKO. Seemingly when KOKO was told of his passing and shown a picture of him on a dvd box she hung her head in sadness. KOKO can speak sign language. A true legend of hollywood just wanted to make people laugh and boy he achieved that by a country mile! :notworthy
