Hurricane Ophelia to hit Ireland tomorrow morning..

National Hurricane Center announced a few minutes ago Ophelia is no longer a hurricane but a post-tropical cyclone (different name but impacts will be same as a CAT1 hurricane)

Also worth noting that Isle of Man is expected to be impacted. Many casinos and software providers including Random Number Generator servers are located there :eek2:

I have family in Sunderland, Dundee, Elgin and Kerry. I don't know the proximity of everyone as far as the storm goes, as I haven't spoken to them today. But I am wishing everyone nothing but safety! :)

If its the Sunderland where I am (which I presume it is) then they will be fine :) we are forecast extremely strong winds from tomorrow lunchtime, but nothing like whats hitting Ireland at the moment

Dundee should be fine too :)

Ironically 30 years to the day when the big bastard of 1987 hit, the last great storm. I remember that as a teen, the walls blown over, trains cancelled etc. This won't be as bad, even for Eire. It could still go further east, but I doubt it.

I remember it well too, I was travelling from Rochdale to Sunderland and there were loads of trains cancelled, I should have been home by about 12 that day, it was after 6 when I got in and that was lucky as I just managed to grab a train with seconds to spare, otherwise with would have been a couple of hours later. The destruction was horrendous all over the country. Michael Fish too some stick over that didn't he!

Bebo, Elgin should be fine too, Kerry will probably get hit pretty bad, its pretty much where the storm is predicted to hit (unless its changed since yesterday)

I live in Cork City and it's just a bit windy so far. I know there have been some power outages due to a few downed poles and trees but everything seems fine so far. Hope it continues to be kind to us and not give us too much of a battering. Stay safe everyone :)

Thats good to hear, hopefully its not as bad as predicted for you all :)

It's not supposed to peak until this afternoon. I just went out, my nice cleaned black Beemer is covered in bloody Saharan sand, the overcast sky has a weird orangey-yellow tint to it and when the sun pokes through it is bright red, like a sunset plus it's ridiculously muggy and warm.

Yep same here. Calm before the storm me thinks!

This really is weird, it's like there's an eclipse, the sky has just clouded over, really dark and everything looks like you're wearing light yellow tinted glasses, never seen anything like this! I'd take a picture but don't think it'd show how yellow things really are, the tint has made other colours like the lawn look a very vivid green! :eek2:

We'd just moved to London in 1987, August or so if I can recall. Couple of months later we had the Great Storm that I shan't forget (nor Michael Fish:oops:), followed by the King's cross fire just a month later. Quite a vivid start to life here I tell you

Not too bad here at the moment, but this afternoons flights & ferries have been cancelled ahead of what's to come...

Also...

"The Isle of Man Met Office has issued an amber weather warning, with severe gale force winds of 60-70mph forecast to hit the island. Gusts could reach 80mph in exposed locations at the peak of the storm between 6pm and 8pm, resulting in a risk of structural damage and fallen trees.
Coastal overtopping is also expected around tonight’s high tide at 10.15pm, with four to six metre waves depositing large amounts of seawater and debris on seafronts around the island."

WRT data centres (where the servers etc are located), they're generally all single-storey facilities in sheltered areas, so I'm pretty sure they'll be fine. Bigger risk will likely be to power lines, so a good test for the UPS's & back-up generators

Ha I casually just now looked at the light outside from the hallway and wow! Same thing here....I thought the lightbulb was playing up at first

Some really strange off-orange hue knocking about, looks post-apocalyptic and very surreal

Thanks! I just got word from Scotland, just some really heavy rain expected tonight and tomorrow your time. The last post from Kerry via facebook was yesterday my time, and that it was eerie quiet. Nothing posted since, which Im not surprised.

It is really bad out here at the moment...
Schools all cancelled for today and tomorrow...

Also my wife's work and my workplace are closed for today as many other offices are closed.
Supermarkets all closed, public transport cancelled for today, basicly everything came to a hold.

3 people dead sofar from falling trees as far as I am aware and half a mile from where I live there was police, firetruck and ambulance.
No idea what happened yet but we will hear soon.

We are in the middle of it right now and am surprised we still have power and internet as 360.000 people across the country are off the powergrid, possibly for a few days...So keep my fingers crossed we will not have any power outages...

Wind is howling, really super strong gusts as we speak...

That is due to dust from the Sahara in the upper atmosphere m8...It is not very common but it happens every so many years...The sun reflecting on it gives it this eery looking yellow ish skies..

we had the yellow skies earlier, and then about 1pm had the thickest fog I've ever seen, you could barely see the other side of the road it was that bad.
Then suddenly it lifted, sun beating down and was like a summers day, but about 30 mins ago we started getting really strong winds, not as strong as some places are getting though.
Hope everyones ok in Ireland and anywhere else thats been hit.

Worst is over...Funny part is it was nearly dry the whole day during the storm and now the storm has moved on we have torrential downpours...
But at least we got to keep the electricity and internet going...
People in the south were less lucky and could be out of power for as much as a week according ESB, the Irish power network operator.

Yes, and I just had this posted on my facebook about 10 min ago.

Jennifer I got cut of power and internet. Both back now. I am okay and ni damage to my house. But it is a mess in the country and three dead. I am glad it us over

I think its just starting here, the wind is so bad I've gave up watching telly as I couldn't hear it, and turning it up any louder would have meant disturbing the neighbours!

Amen to that. Power or internet didn't go out at my place. It was very windy throughout the day and after the storm passed there was a lot of debris in the road including the obligatory shopping cart in the street, par for the course in my area. Cable and internet is out at a few relatives houses and boy are they bored tonight.

There have been a few deaths of motorists being killed by falling trees and a guy using a chainsaw on a fallen tree. These happened during the storm which highlights the need for people to heed warnings and stay inside during dangerous weather events.

For a bit of levity here is my favourite story so far in connection to the storm. The following is from the Irish Examiner and I laughed my ass off when I read it.
Meanwhile, it is feared a religious statue which was hit by a tree in Dublin and came loose from its base during Storm Ophelia, has been stolen.

The Mother and Child statue in Finglas Village was seen being put into a vehicle this afternoon by a number of men, who Dublin City Council says don't work for it.

Gardaí have deployed a number of vehicles to search for both the statue and the vehicle - but have had no luck in locating either.
