I asked the question because I was wondering how many people who gamble actually do own their own homes... or paying it off etc.

I am now 45... turned 45 just afew days ago actually.
When I was a young swan once upon a time, I had made bad decisions, choices and sometimes these things sting you in the butt time and time and time again for a long long time and some more.

Now things have changed a fair bit with life experiences and age, maturity your prospective in life changes and so does your wants/needs, dreams and so on.
Had I known now what I know, my life back then would have been fairly different and I would be in a better position in life today then I am.

And as my father would say (passed away not long ago & I miss you Dad) is "Shit Happens" I swear i think he was the one who created that phrase or made it a popular used one :p

Now we are a family of 6, 2 adults, 4 children, though technically you could say 3 children as my oldest daughter is now 19 still at home and most likely will be for some years to come.
We rent, we have a miserable $5k in savings and wanted our Dream which the dream came far to late in life to achieve, our family home.

With paying rent, your normal every day bills, food, and all kinds of random expenses especially with children the savings side of things is little too none and seldom enough too become fruitful I guess.

Reality hit me, just recently, and in a BIG way to the point it hurt so much and is a constant ache that refuses to go away now.
That we will never acquire a home to buy, older we get less chance for a home loan, less chance for savings to use for a deposit you need something like 20% thats Huge for a property of around $360k
Huge when the market is flooded with investors buying it up and all issues of property to get into it that is happening in Aus anyway.

Sometimes you just realize things far too damn late in life.

I could go on and on, but really no point.

However the point here is one that is simple, and it is too anyone much younger then myself and in a good position financially or similar scenario's and have not thought to buy a house or apartment etc..

Don't leave it too long, and don't waste your money and be stuck in a loop later on, and one you can never get out of!!

I know of some people much younger then myself who throw their money away and alot in gambling too who could easily save decent amounts and be better of in the later years of live but
are not thinking far enough into the future to make better decisions now, for much later on.

Be a wise Padewon and think far into your own future!!

Don't get stuck in " should of, could of, would of". It's not a good place to be. Owning, renting is a matter of choice. Each has it's benefits. If you take a look at the financial spectrum, and add the political spectrum ( for good measure) globally. Your money is safer in your pockets, what little there is. It isn't a great time to invest in any market, let alone the housing.:)

Guess my life story goes something like yours.

So many bad choices in younger days and as ive been told so many times i have wasted my life.

But i dont dwell on the past. Long as i can afford to live and boys get what they want im happy enough. I will never be a rich man but thats just way life goes.

I rent my house and never willownmy own home. But to be honest i wouldnt want to own a house. Happy renting knowing anything needs repaired i just have to phone housing and get someone out to fix it. Also means if i want to move i can get a different house no need to worry about selling etc. But with my credit rating id never get a mortgage in a million years anyway lol.

Pretty much same as Paul above.

Private rent with a landlord who has less motivation than a graveyard so usually end up doing it myself, otherwise it don't get done!

Made some gambling related errors, one HUGE one back in the day (talking some 26 years back now pmsl!) but the important thing I always remember is that I learnt from it/them.

My gambling is always last in the agenda, although I do budget well to cover it so losses or a run of losses do never affect my day to day life financially (only the bad moods :p)

If that life changing win was to ever come (such as TDK jackpot, so close the other day ) the first thing I would do is buy 2-3 properties to guarantee me some regular income via renting and also have some nice assets for a rainy day.

The second thing I would do is quit all forms of gambling whatsoever!

I've bought 2 houses, the first went in the 90's crash, the second still in. When you own your home and have no mortgage, you are worry-free usually. Don't like the job? Tell the boss to take a hike. Do like your job? Then most of your income is disposable. Only advantage here of renting is being put on the old king cole - you'll get it all paid, whereas if you have a mortgage you can only claim interest, and that after 9 months...

I know Brits who've gone to Aus and they tell me how horrendously expensive basics like food are there compared to the UK in real terms.

But yes, getting on the housing ladder before 40 latest I believe is a must - the wealth is handed down to your kids and in retirement you have a decent life with the main expense gone. Plus you usually get a good profit on it. It's heavy going at the start of the mortgage, but assuming interest rates are stable/low you find after several years your mortgage is far less than rent in real terms for the house you're in.

So yes, I can see why it bothers you a bit - it would me.

It's the same thing here in Canada and with me so don't worry.

I want to own a home and the bank has asked me if I am thinking of doing do cause I have A+ credit with them but don't make enough money and me being single.

I have to figure something out here in the next 8 months, Most likely try and rent a small 2 bedroom house as I don't want to live in a apartment building at all.

Need to make the big bucks like casino reps.;)

Having my own home sure would be swell. My landlord is selling the house and I have to be out in the next 4 days and havent managed to find a new one. :eek2:

Ya, life's sucking hard right now.

I was wondering about you. What will you do?
Sorry for the side track here.

Yes.

Though sometimes it can be the opposite too, love the location you are in, etc and then landlord wants to sell and you need to move, then you have only a certain time frame to find a property and it may not be near the schools you need for your children, or near this or have this or that and so forth and then your screwed as well. Renting no stability, no chance or options to really make the house your home, by beauitfying it adding to it and blah blah.

Like now, we are looking to move, as we are severely over crowded Truely.
There goes the veggie beds... all 6 probably take them with us, as we paid for he wood and etc ourselves anyway.
Needing to save for the Bond and Rent, so that is 8 weeks upfront here in Aus, 4 weeks is the Bond, and another 4 weeks is your upfront rent requirements.
Moving costs on top as well arggg...

And trying to find an ideal home, viewing it first, applying and you and every other person applying, it's becoming very tough as well.

And other people in similar situations, hopefully this thread helps other's alot younger to think harder into their own futures and later in life and so forth to make some what better choices maybe.
Eh who knows.

Either way for me it's something I woke up too and faced, will not happen, but I still do not like how I feel about it and everything else that goes with it.

Oh no, holy cow!
4 days is far to short time left, to find one... what are you planning to do ???

Well, I've a friend willing to put me up in the interim, which is less than ideal as that'll be her, her 3 kids, roommate, 2 dogs and cat...throwing me in the mix with 2 more dogs and 2 cats (and if anyone knows me at all, they'd know I'd live in a tent in a forest with the 2 dogs before I'd part with either of them).

My big problem is finding a place that's 1.pet friendly and 2. has a yard while 3. still fits into a budget I can carry monthly. And this is a pretty small town with few options.

The crappy part, is not only will I have to move twice (moving/trucks fees I can't afford) but I'm pretty much going to have to scrap more than half my belongings since there's pretty much no way I can keep the furniture I've accrued over the years there.

Lemmie tells ya, I was realllllly hoping that TDKR FS would have popped for me :eek2:

These things tend to work out; so I've faith.
That or I'll be in the looney bin with the stress

I wish I could help. I really do!

Fingers crossed it will work out. I'll keep on worrying so please keep us updated :)

Dont even go there and start thinking on the TDK and hoping, it as such bad affects. I hoped like hell and it of course didnt happen and I knew it anyway... I play on .60 sif its going to pop on that anyway.
Poor stay poor.

Now for you and your situation, furniture, can you not put it into storage maybe ???

As for house and price and pet friendly and so on, I hear You very much, we are in this situation of trying to find something suitable.
We are so over crowded what is called a couch for sitting your butt on, no one has access too, other then various different items that have no where else too fit or go. Seriously.

The stress true I do not know you but still I wish i could take it away for you for a while. :(

Now you said the situation is not ideal for sharing purposes, perhaps so, however it is still that a solution for now that is not in the streets and still with your beautiful pet friends, no ?
It can be made to work on a short term basis ???

Renting and the costs and being able too afford it, can you consider maybe I dont know... taking on a place when you find one suitable and maybe finding a room mate too share to cost load ???

Not sure.. can you move outter a little more ??? might be cheaper ?

Im outter CBD about 50 minutes or so from city, and even here is becoming expensive now... but its still cheaper then city and I hate city people and the city anyway :p

Paid my own home off in 2010. As advised earlier - I keep most of my savings in my pockets, but made some small investments in gold.

Have been gambling big (with corresponding losses) in the past (until 2014), but stick to smaller deposits now...

Well, having 2 big pooches is never easy and apt is out of the question - I'd never put them through it again after the first time. I specifically moved TO this town to afford a house with a yard just for them.

I hadn't planned on moving in 5 yrs so that was a real teeth-kicker (considering I spent loads of $ putting in decking, fencing, and flooring..another draw-back to renting.)

Omg. I went through that back in December. I didn't even know the house was up for sale. Talk about stressed out. Fate was kind and gave me 4k in winnings on here, so that helped. But finding a place money or not had to be the most stressful thing. Landlords think they are entitled to know everything from your credit report, banking info etc. Its BS. I will keep my fingers crossed for you! :(

When I had moved here, I had 50 bucks in my pocket, said, fuggit, and tossed it online and took out 3.5K and man, stress went POOF.

This time round, stress is throught the roof.
And ya, I got the landlord driving into the driveway, leans out, says, 'oh by the way, we're selling, you've 60 days' :eek2:

Dionysus, I'm sending you lots of positive energy that you'll find a need place very soon, best of luck!:) This situation you're in can (fortunately) never occur in the Netherlands, selling one's property can never violate tenants' rights, even if there's no written agreement.

Here they need to know your renting rating.. as in if you been evicted in debt with a landlord etc. And do a database check which has all this info.
Not your credit rating that I am aware of....

But they do make sure you have x amount of incoming and x amount too cover rent comfortably
Of course higher in come earners will in most cases have better chance in being selected as well.

I can see why landlord do need to acquire some info, if I owned an investment property I definitely would want to know if person earns enough can afford it without any issues of not getting the rent money, if they were previously evicted and or issues etc.. they need to protect themselves and assests too I guess.

But the cost of relocating is Huge.. and sucks whena bomb shell is dropped on you too move, they selling. :(

Ya, they ask for quite a bit. Last place: 2 references, landlord statement, proof of income and bank note. To RENT. And then, of course, no smoking, no pets etc.

Thankfully in Ontario we have this quirky, nifty little renters' benefit, wherein, you can agree to have no dogs, sign a lease saying no dogs, then turn around and move in your dogs, as because by law, the no pets clause is automatically null and void the second it's written into a lease.
