Some of you know I used to work in Alaska as a commercial fisherman (pre-Casinomeister). The main boat I used to work on sunk yesterday :(

The crew is safe, but it's such a shame for the boat - it's an absolutely gorgeous vessel - an old wooden purse seiner built in 1952. They don't make them like this anymore:

I hope they can salvage it.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Interesting

I lived 4 years in a small Norwegian city along the coast called Aalesund (Ålesund)-one of the worlds largest export ports for bacalao. Some of my friends there worked at sea (fishing, supply boats etc...). So I know that the bond between a fisherman and his boat/vessel often is quite strong.

You're a regular Herman Melville, ain'cha? ;)

I worked on a boat once, years ago, but it was an easy job, cruising up the Saone River; I loved that. Boating takes you places you'd never ever ever go if you stayed onshore. (duh, I know, but you can't understand what that means unless you've actually done it.)

Yeah, it just wrenches at my heart. That boat was my home for a few seasonal years after my army days; an ex-paratrooper trying to find his purpose in life. We worked and played pretty damn hard - those were some really good times.

I hope they can salvage her.

Thanks for sharing your pics of a memory that will always live with you. It is a beautiful boat indeed and you are blessed to have been part of the Lively Janes history.
I'm sure they will be able to bring her back up and she will sail again one day.

Why is it I wonder that we sometimes run across a car, boat or even a house that adds so much to our life it's almost spiritual or like it has a soul and we even grieve for it when it's gone. I hope they can fix it too.
Great pics. Thanks Bryan.
