Rugby World Cup - who do you fancy?

I know sport gets largely ignored on CM, but as the Rugby World Cup is in my back yard this year and it all begins tomorrow evening I was wondering if there were any thoughts on who might win this year. The bookies have the All Blacks as favourites (no surprises), however they then have England as 2nd favourite. I can only put this down to previous world cup form and home advantage, as we haven't exactly set the world alight in terms of results in recent years. Not withstanding they are in the group of death with the Aussies and the Welsh.

Best odds (as shown on oddschecker)
New Zealand - 11/8
England - 9/2
South Africa - 7/1
Australia - 8/1
Ireland - 10/1
France - 16/1
Wales - 25/1
Argentina - 66/1
Scotland - 150/1

Personally I think France could have a very good run in this world cup and their odds seem way longer than their chances. I also think Argentina could be the surprise package this year and I am expecting them to make it to the latter stages of the tournament.

Anyone else care to wade in with some predictions of their own?

Don't count out the Aussies, we have been playing a lot better this year.
We did beat the All Blacks in Australia only recently and also the South Africans.
(but they flogged us the next week in NZ)

At the end of the day though i gotta be honest and say i doubt anyone will beat New Zealand if they play to their best
But they have a lot of their players getting near the end of their careers and that could be their downfall in a big tourney!

I am certainly wouldn't discount the Aussies and I expect them to get out the groups. Which means that England are going to have to fight off Wales to ensure safe passage too.

Japan just beat South Africa!
Awesome game to watch at the end.
South Africa got a couple of easy tries earlier in the game but Japan just wanted it more in the end and was great to see.

Personally I fancy Ireland to win. Have to support my countrymen:D Also we did beat Canada quite badly so maybe that's an omen of things to come.

Odds on South Africa losing to the Japanese were reportedly very high, so the bookies probably took a hammering from the fortunate and faithful who backed Japan.

It was a well-deserved victory that provided great entertainment in my opinion; it's always nice to see an underdog buck to odds and win, and those guys played with total commitment, undeterred by the big reputation of the Springboks. I think Eddie Jones can take a big bow for his coaching contribution, too.

The South Africans now have a steep hill to climb if they are not to suffer the indignity (for them) of an early departure from the RWC...and the criticism back home will be fierce.

That was an amazing game. I watched it and couldn't believe the Japs not taking the easy penalty kick for a draw at the end, and going for the winning try. Best ever Rugby game I've watched. They were 66/1 to win that, the Boks 1/80 on...

I agree - a great and daring effort by Japan.

The Springboks can't say they were not warned - SA players who have played professionally in Japan warned them that this was a well coached and prepared side with a ton of commitment. They had that confirmed Saturday to their cost.

I am pleased that the defeated Boks displayed sportsmanship after the game by congratulating the Japanese in a dressing room visit...and according to some reports that courtesy extended to SA fans, who reportedly applauded their Japanese equivalents off the train on its return to London.

It's do or die now for the Springboks, so expect a helluva game against Samoa, who are not known for shrinking from a good physical encounter.

It's got to be Ireland this year! Most of us at Trada are Irish so we have to keep the faith. In fact if we win it, I'll celebrate by dishing out some free spins to the meisters so watch this space :)

I was in a bar in Dublin when South Africa v Japan was on, nobody was paying any attention to it. All of a sudden with five minutes to go we're all standing on our tables screaming at the TV, what a match! (sorry to all the Springboks fans out there).

I had to laugh when Ireland played England last time - being an all-Ireland team, was it Paddy power that offered 25/1 that one or more players from Ulster would sing to the English anthem 'God Save The Queen' during the pre-match line up and not the Irish one? :)

I predict Ireland will make the Quarters at least, and the Welsh too. It wouldn't surprise me if 3 of 4 of the semi-finalists were England, Ireland and Wales....

It would be glorious if Ireland won. My dad thinks it's going to be the New Zealand All Blacks but it would be a proud moment if our team beat them:p So if the quarter finalists would be England, Ireland Wales and New Zealand than that would be a great line up I think:thumbsup:

No team has truely lit up the World Cup yet, but that is also normally always the way with this competition. The injury list for some teams is looking bad already. Wales especially bad, England also have a few key injuries as well.

Ireland, France, New Zealand and Australia have impressed me so far, still early days.

I can see england beating australia on Saturday just about then that leaves us against Australia and we (wales) are likely out . Injuries have crippled us .
C'mon Australia on Saturday tho!

Personally, I think it would be Australia. Pretty hard to choose between Ireland and Australia.
My money is on Australia tho.

You never know what might happen. In sports miracles do occur and the strongest team sometimes loses.:D

World Cup Trophy will be delivered to New Zealand !

New Zealand will take it !! It is sure now!
If they manage to get over France the World Cup Trophy will be delivered to New Zealand ! :)
