Google Fined $22.5 Million As GAN Compensates Affiliates

Google is about to be hit with the biggest FTC settlement ever. Almost simultaneously the Google Affiliate Network has announced a compensation scheme for affiliates who may have lost out as a result of Google being unable to track Safari browser users.

According to the WSJ Google is ready to agree a $22.5 million settlement with the FTC that comes as a result of Google's deliberate bypassing of the default cookie-blocking in Apple's Safari Web browser. Google had implemented a special fake-form submission technology that fooled the browser into accepting DoubleClick cookies even though the browser was set to block them. The privacy-violating scheme was revealed back in February and since then most Safari users have not been tracked by Google's Web properties.

In what some may see as a not-so-strange coincidence, the Google Affiliate Network's new compensation scheme for affiliates that may have lost commissions on sales by Safari users has been launched. The "lost" commissions have remained unpaid until now precisely because Google has been unable to track those conversions since February.
