A bit of a miscalculation

Yes, these little oopsies do happen in the world of promotions. Enthusiasm for poker (as well as our economy) has waned so there's just not as much participation these days.

The casino could always pay the players (so they still look good), then later have a change of heart... naaah, we didn't make enough on this tourney so we're reversing the payouts or setting a stop pay on the checks. ;)
 
Kudos to Hard Rock for doing the right thing...As mentioned, they probably made up a little chunk of the money from the players via side games/rooms/etc...

Overlays are pretty common in poker tournaments, not normally $2.5m but they do happen.
A room can't just decide to pull a tournament because it won't make the guarantee though, not without a huge backlash.

Yea...I guarantee that if it was a simple < $500 buy-in, they would have canceled it, though...:)
