Hello,

First off i'd like to say that I really like this website. I have spent some time perusing the articles here and I think that it is one of the best gaming portals around.

I have been designing a portal in my spare time and have been looking for some advice on advertising alternatives to affiliate programs.

Some questions I have are:

Is there a rough formula that one could use to calculate what to charge for advertising, based on the number of visitors to your site? Which casinos are willing to pay for this type of advertising?

Also, is there a decent gambling webmaster's forum or group around? I tried the GPWA but after 1 thread of discussion I decided to keep looking. They didn't seem impressed that I quoted an article from casinomeister.com and were very distrusting, suspicious and rude.

Finally, which quality (content-rich) gambling portals don't use affiliate programs?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Whoiscasino,

And welcome to the forum. I just read the ruckus you caused at the GPWA. Shame on you for seeking information. The term "banner farm" is fightin' words over there since I left that organization nearly a year ago using that term to describe the majority of sites that GPWA members were churning out.

I never said all. I said some. I'm sure that has mostly changed now...

The GPWA was once an excellent sorce of information for aspiring webmasters, but it's lost it's significance since it's a cliquish hangout for argumentive webmasters. What a pity.

But anyway, to answer your questions.

What you need to do is become a detective of sorts. Check out a number of the larger portals and do advertising queries. Some will post what they charge up front, some will make enquiries of you since they don't like to give out their rates to anybody. This can give you a good rule of thumb on what you can charge.

Most casinos have an affiliate program as well as a media buy agency. When in doubt just ask who does their media buys and I'm sure they'd be happy to let you know.

Not many. Gonegambling doesn't use affiliate programs. I believe WOL is the same. Others are mixtures - such as mine. I have old timers here that are affiliate programs (Sands, Intercasino), but most are media buys. I believe most of the oldtimer portals are media buys.

The main thing about your portal is that it should have unique content, theme, or an approach that will set it off from the rest. Get away from the usual Vegas Best Bets Golden Treasure Banner Farm, to something this industry lacks.

It's the core idea that counts.

Good luck.

Hello again,

> The term "banner farm" is fightin' words over there

Geesh, I guess so!! Had I known that the GPWA were the 'poster child' for casino affiliates I probably wouldn't have gone into detail explaining my reasons for not using affiliate programs.

When I posted my questions there I was completely honest with who I am, what I wanted to do, my website, my ideas, etc. I apoligized more than once for what they interpreted as insults, and even complemented their website. They said that I was 'quite dishonest' because I 'say one thing and my posts say another'. I have to laugh, since the only discussion that I have ever had with those people was in that one discussion thread!

That aside, i'm glad to see that there are professional portal owners out there who believe in creating sites with useful content and who are willing take the time to give a little guidance to the newbies. The answers that you gave to my questions were just what I was looking for! When my site goes live I will probably return with more questions.

Again, thank you very much. Your professionalism and lack of attitude is greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Wayne
