As the title indicates. guess I am asking the UK folks!

Ages ago I used to live in a briuish colony and we used to use the pound shilling ,pence and farthing.
I have been residing in the US now for ages and did not pay attn to the decimal conversion of the pound!

Question / The amount 10.68 pounds(I dont have a pound sign on my puter) for example what is the .68
Is it 68 cents or shillings?
how many shillings to the pound now and how many pennies to the shilling?
Quick lesson please and THANKS
AND IN THE OLD DAYS WAS IT 12 PENCE TO 1 SHILLING AND 20 SHILLING TO ONE POUND I know it was 4 farthings to one penny

Not sure if I'm right lol

4 farthings to a penny.
2 farthings to a halfpenny. ( haepney)
2 haepneys to a penny .
3 pennies = thruppence. 4 thrupenny bits= 1 shilling.
6 pennies = sixpence. 2 "tanners" = 1 shilling.
12 pennies = one shilling.
20 shillings = one pound. ( 12pennies x 20shillings=240 pennies in a pound.

Holy cow, how many times can you split a poxy penny? I can't wait for them to get rid of any money that is brown in colour.

Urm - we went decimal in 1971 (unfortunately I AM old enough to remember it!)
£10.68 = 10 Pounds and 68 PENCE (or Pennys)

And, yes - your last sentence is correct!

We used to use feet and inches too - god that was ridiculous! Now metric is the norm.

The EU has tried to force up to drop Pounds and Pints in favour of Killograms & Litres - but so far we have been putting up quite a good fight with those two... especially in the pub! ;)
Milk & Beer are still sold by the pint - petrol, diesel & most other liquids are in Litres now.
Foodstuffs are sold in Kilo's - but when I weigh myself in Kg's it is pretty meaningless to me - I only understand stones & pounds... both of which I have far too many of... :(

I am not boasting but I am not old enough to remember KK, but backing up your post I used to notice a lot of products in the UK sold in grams but 'convenient' amounts - e.g. 454 grams (a pound) etc - the wife does the shopping these days so not sure if it still happens. :)

PS: One thing that winds me up having moved away from the UK is tourist places selling 'a pint' which is in a 500ml glass. I have no idea how much I have lost but guessing a fair few pints!

Wow now your talking some time back,

We are using penny's 1p, 100 of them in a £1 so £5.68 will be 568 1ps

we have 1p 5p 10p 20p 50p £1 & £2 coins Than there is £5 £10 £20 & £50 note, I do not get to see many of the last note :)

I can only remember two amounts changed since I was born, That was the £1 note that finished in 1988 & the £2 coin introduced in 1998, I think the half penny finished in 1983,

There has been some changes, The 5p (pence) coin changed size to much smaller & the 10p & 50p was also minimized, I belive the £10 used to be bigger unless I was just smaller :)

Those £50 notes, or a salmon as they are commonly known (due to their pinkish colour), are easy to come by if you live in London. Simply pop into the Hippodrome Casino and make a withdrawal from an ATM and it will gladly spit out as many as you want. Although, try and buy something outside the casino with a £50 note and you will be treated like a bank robber or an alien from another planet!

68ml I believe.

Milk still sold in pints BUT primary measure is 568ml. True of most things that were sold by the pound or pint.

So you left the US now??:D

If you had £10.68 is would be decimal.

If it were imperial currency that amount would have be quoted as £10, 13 /- (Shillings) and 7d (old pennies).

Back in Saxon times, approx. 55 Groats. :)

Doing maths at school was a nightmare in old money, if you add up the 3 amounts below they come to £7 4s 6d (Pounds/shillings/pence). the pence column (12 to a shilling) adds up to 18 which is 1 shilling and 6 pence so you put 6d in the last column and carry 1, the middle column is shillings (20 to the pound) so that comes to 24, write down 4 and carry 1, then just add up the Pounds.

£1 6s 5d
£2 4s 2d
£3 13s 11d

=£7 4s 6d

Yes - that is SO bloody annoying! Even in Tesco's the cashier has to call a supervisor over to check if the £50 note is real.

It always amazes me on my many trips to the Czech Republic, that when we shop in the supermarkets there, the checkout assistant always thoroughly checks our trolley to make sure no items are left in it, and even opens every toothpaste box to make sure we haven't snuck something more valuable inside (my wife buys loads at a time).
But when we pay and hand over a couple of 2,000CZK notes (worth about £55 each and with nothing like the security of UK notes), the cashier just takes them & puts them in the till without a second glance!

The only time I get a £50 note is in the casinos, trying to spend them in a supermarket seems to come with a guantanamo like interrogation. Considoring how expensive food shopping is these days you would've thought they see them quite often.
Also every other European country seems to have notes bigger than a £50 and no one bats an eyelid when you buy a coke of coke with them!

Yes the last time I had a bunch of 50's there was Scottish from a job we done we was paid in cash, Not many places would accept
