Bryan is it possible to change the forum settings so we can edit our own posts indefinitely? I hate reading my posts just to find out hours later that I made some unforgivable grammar mistakes and not being able to edit them.

I'm not the meister but I have to reply anyway :)

That would be really awesome. Then I could go in and change my posts years later, or erase them, maybe change a little here and there.

It wouldn't be so smart I think.
What I do know, is that probably both you and I need to read our posts before we decide if they are worth posting ;)

Obviously Bryan decides how things are going to be here but I can speak to what is technically possible or not.

Yes, it is possible. It's just an option we set in the back end to decide how long after posting a given group can edit their posts.

That said I would be STRONGLY against changing things to something such as you've described. I believe that by doing so you would render the history of the forums irrelevant.

As a moderator many of my decisions are based on what a person has previously said or done on the forums, including myself. It's basically the "accountability" part of being a forum member. Remove that and it's likely to rapidly degenerate in an unmanageable free-for-all. No thanks!

I would rather do this as a user group permission, as in Meister Members and above have x amount of time to make changes. The reason why is that evil SEO or spam dweebs come in make an initial post, and then at some point later return and add spam links etc. without being detected.

As for a user group permission, I would have to look into this.

I have had the same thoughts many times Balth:)
And mostly the faults are too silly to be bothering a mod about..
I would really like to have a longer time.. mostly a week would be plenty in my case :p

The sad part is that even if it's for just Meister members and up, not all will be able to handle it.

I don't know if I could. I think I would have deleted all posts but one that I've made the last 24 hours if I just could do it.
It's easy to say that I would be silly, but we all know that I am so...:p

...and if the reason is grammar mistakes than it's no reason at all. Those mistakes are ok!

We are human and we all make mistakes. Grammar, spelling or the occasional misquote will happen. I do it all the time myself. It makes the forum come alive as opposed to looking like robots are behind the keyboards.

As long as the point is made coherently and with effort, I've never seen the grammar police come out of the woodwork.

I like to read through some of the difficult posts occasionally from folks where English is not their first language but they have made a good attempt. It adds that international flair and I can almost feel the accent in the post.
I would not want someone to go back months later and edit it with google translate. It would loose it's original flavor.

Maybe something like the higher the group, the longer the time to edit? Honestly I said "indefinitely" but a couple of days would work.

Gotta agree with maxd. So many times the "reply with quote" is used to answer or address a post. Should posts be edited after they are "quoted" chaos would ensue. JMO ;)

I wouldn't of thought people editing there posts is a good idea to long after theyve made them espeshally if there calling casinos rouges and coming back later to sabertage threds under the pretens off changing bad grammer.

Strongly against the edit facility being available for more than a few hours for obvious reasons.

I know on Facebook (faceCrack I call it lol) when you edit a post, another person can go in and see the edit history, maybe that is a happy medium...a compromise? That way people can change a few words to better make their point without the suspicion of people changing the context of the original post altogether?

If there was a way to go back and edit some old posts I'd probably delete a bunch. I've had a few meltdowns and/or breakdowns over the years that I'd like to get rid of.

I'm in strong agreement with the "don't change it!" crowd. I also think it would be a very bad idea. :(

I pride myself very highly on using correct English and spelling and cringe when I see even the simplest of mistakes in one of my previous posts - but allowing unlimited editing time would be a slippery slope to potential chaos IMHO. We all make mistakes - and we all have to live with the consequences, no matter how minor.

2 hours (or whatever it is) is actually very generous, most other forums I've seen have a much shorter editing time.

My 2 cents:

Ahhhh.... to be able to travel into the past and .... nahhhh... one much always be cautious doing such things due to the

Given the ability to fully edit old posts could change the sense of a thread entirely... and make it totally confusing... as someone would (inevitably) go back and change wording/phrases which set off a 45 page thread where everyone went apeshit.

Being able to edit posts long after they are written would cause too much confusion.
It's already confusing enough with people editing their posts ~30 minutes after their original post.

For me it is important to not come off looking like a dunce. BUT , ya know, sometimes a schmeer of beer may be the culprit for bad spelling and grammar.

Also, we learn from reading about language (for our non-English speaking members as a first language).

I also enjoy reading posts that are non-English and trying work out using Babblefish what the hell they are saying. lol.:)

This forum would become extremely huge if we had such forums as Germany The ..... or Sweden The.....:)

So, editing? Sometimes yes but I agree that maybe it is not a good idea.
