In short, if you had played basic strategy here, you would have lost. If you had simply stayed on your 8s, you would have won.
True, this can happen at a brick and mortar casino. But my question is this - are the next successive cards (5, 10, 10) dealt no matter what my actions are, or would they have changed (eg instead of the next card being a 5 - which would set up a bust out situation - it would be a 10) if I had simply stayed on my two 8s? Was I "destined" to lose no matter what I did - or is this a true BJ game?

Unfortunately it is a true
BJ game. I've found that online
BJ has many more streaks (good and bad) than a B&M casino. The only difference is when we lose online we're always wondering if they switched the cards depending on how we play our hand. We don't think that in a B&M casino, as it'd be near impossible to stack the decks for a b&m
BJ game...
This plus the fact that you can't take a single
BJ session and try and analyze it. If you started getting 20-30 hands per session as described above with no or a tiny amount of wins on similar hands....then I'd be worried. [edit]
Hell, I take that back. Even at a b&m casino I've had sessions where I've lost every single perfect double...10/11 vs. 4/5/6 where the dealers were always giving me small cards and drawing out. When it gets to be that bad, I simply don't double until the cards are running better...sure you won't win as much if you do win the hand, but on the other side of things you won't lose as much either
[/edit]
Even more similarities from online to B&M casinos is where the cards are falling in such a way that you just can't lose...I for one usually bump the bet up when it's going like that...then it comes to one hand where they give you the "perfect double" as described above, only to take a good chunk of chips.
All in all I would say
RTG & MG have fair
BJ games. Playtech....well, I trust them about as far as I could throw them..lol
