I am surprised they 'still' teach VB at Uni What is the purpose of the course? Making a few simple windows applications, phycics simulations or something else? The language is not that 'modern' or optimal for very much.

You welcome to ask questions here.

So what programming projects are you all up to atm?

Besides my art-program I recently made the following old-school demo.
If you had a C64 computer maybe you will understand it. Still miss the old thing....

And I made a stand-alone plasma effect also. (dont watch too much, it will give you an headache...)

And one of my older projects. I wanted to try some 3D graphics. I choose Java again since this is my favorite language. Maybe you have to download the java 3d plugin.

Hey, Zoozie, I got a question for you, since you're experienced in Java.

I've had a couple of classes (college level) in programming with Java, and I'm interested in starting a Instant Messenger project.

Where would be a good place to start? I'm familiar with networking and realize there needs to be a server in place as well as the client itself, but I've never programmed a network application in Java.

Could you point me in the right direction or throw me some tips?

    Thanks

edit: Or would this be an easier program to code in C#? I've heard that both languages are pretty similar...

Java or C# is up to you. There is more help/open source community about Java and also it is not M$, which is a plus in itself. I am most to java of course. Also the client program can then run on any platform.

Your messenger project sounds pretty big. It is not a small task.
    Java is good at communication/protocols.

For protocol you should look at XMPP
    [http://xml.coverpages.org/xmpp.html
    http://xml.coverpages.org/draft-sain...3920bis-02.txt

When developing you can have server and 1 client run on the same machine, so development/testing should be easy. The server and client are both standalone programs. It is very easy to google small examples of this for a start. Then you have the
    two building blocks.

    Thanks...

I agree, I think I'll stick with Java since it's platform independent. It's also good to hear that it's also good w/communication. I think the hardest part will be mastering & fully understanding XMPP.

I haven't read a RFC in years, so this should be interesting.

    Hello guys,

I'm learning CSS and I have a problem. When I insert and image and preview it the image shifts/moves to the bottom right and I don't have any properies set for it to do that so I'm lost. I'm editing/modifying a template in case that matters.

Any suggestions? I'm using Expression Web.

    Thanks

Hi and thanks for letting me into the group. I'm not really a programmer, but I do have some experience...mostly I want to acquire more knowledge to work with programmers, so I will mostly observe and ask for occasional clarification. I take criticism well, so if I am less than helpful ever, please advise.
