    Im 46, been smoking for over 20 years, a pack and maybe 2 if im playing online, ive noticed im getting abit winded , i think its time to kick this habit, i dont do meds well, so if anyone knows a good way to stop, please share.............laurie

    Wow, there's lots of really great advice in here. I need to quit smoking and lose about 15 lbs, lower my blood pressure and lower my cholesterol. Doctor put me on Lipitor, but it's kickin' the crap out of my liver and kidneys so I had to stop taking it. Once (if it ever!) the weather starts getting a little more bearable, I want to start walking again. Until then I've, not been able to do much in the way of outdoor exercising, I'm eating better (about 5 small meals a day instead of 2 large meals). I don't have too much I can cut back on since I don't eat desserts and I'm not much of a junk food junkie. I don't eat out alot, but that's because I work in a restaurant 5-6 days a week.

    Anyways, I've had some really good reading material and some great ideas. Hope someone pops back in once in a while!

    I read an interesting article about two months ago on the topic of hunger pangs and dehydration.
    It stated that if you have bouts of severe hunger pangs it may not be that you need food but a sign that you need to increase your fluid intake because you may be dehydrated.
    I am terrible about drinking enough water. So I decided to try a little experiment.
    When I got blindsided by an intense feeling of hunger, I would drink a glass or a bottle of water. Only after I finished it and waited 15-30 minutes did I then re-evaluate if I was truly hungry.
    The results... I would say I cut my hunger pang snacking down to half. I am also down 17 pounds!
    Other hints I have read to increase your fluid intake.
    If it's the lack of flavor that you hate when it comes to drinking water, add a lemon, lime or orange juice to give it a zing. Crystal Light has great new flavors as well, and options for portable water bottles.
    Cold weather? How about decaffeinated tea or hot water with lemon.

    Watched two episodes of Dr Alice the other day. 1st one was about the liver and damage caused by drinking. Advice was to not drink alcohol every day as the liver needs time to repair itself in time for the next bout of drinking.

    2nd episode was about the stomach/bowels. Advice was to eat more fruit and veg as this is roughage that helps food digest quicker and exit your body quicker. A test was done with Dr Alice and a woman whose main diet was chocolate and snacks but very little fruit and veg. The test was to eat a bowl of sweet corn as this will show up in their feces/sh*t. They both ate a bowl of sweet corn and then clicked their stop watches. Dr Alice's came out the other end in 30 hours. The womans came out in 4 days.

    The point of the test being more roughage in your diet promotes a healthier digestive system and can help ward of bowel diseases like cancer.

    Been reading up on winter tips and health. I guess the hardest thing for me is to resist the hibernation mode when the weather turns colder.
    Anyone have any tips about how you motivate yourself to exercise during the winter months?

    Its so hard to exercise during those winter months , I have fun just taking small walks and keeping warm , the best exercise there is imo......... Laurie
