My computer's in the hospital.

My main computer, the one I use to work and to play, the one that's zooming fast with lots of RAM and tons of space and that my monitor is perfectly calibrated for, is in the hospital with heatsink issues.

I had to take it to the shop and leave it there for a bloody week - 4 days just sitting there and 2 days on the bench. BUSINESS days.

I think no problem, I've got my old laptop, I'll use that. I think I'll just hook up to my external drive, pop out the stuff I was working on, get it finished. Wrong.

It turns out that my laptop is only USB1, and my hard drive is USB2 - I can plug it in and read it, but it slows everything down even more. I played a couple Easter free chips at RTG and I swear I was ready to kill myself, it was so excrutiating. Being the impatient type, I just jacked up my bet and blew it cause it wasn't even fun watching that hurky jerky freezing blech.

In hindsight I should have just saved them because shortly after, I thought of those USB devices not being compatible, so I unplugged them and now I almost feel like I'm jumped back to the 90s at least so maybe I can get something done after all. But oh I miss my computer.

Maybe I'm just spoiled, but if I click on something and it doesn't open instantly, I get really cranky.

That sucks! At least you have a laptop you can access and browse with. I blew up my computer about 8 months ago, am currently using my sons as he has a laptop. I was going to replace my motherboard and processor but found out all the rest of my computer guts are obsolete and I will have to start from scratch. And since I'm still not working, I'm hoping I don't do any damage to my sons.

It's funny - I think back to my first computer, it was a Mac Centris. It had a 25MHZ processor and 250MB hard drive. Seriously, I used to work on that - I remember trying to straighten a photo in Photoshop and it took hours.

I also had an external Syquest drive to back up my work. Anyone remember those? These big disks that held either 44 or 88MB. When I first started burning CDs you had to buy gold masters, they cost about $15 per disk!

At one point I also had a dot matrix printer - that thing shook the whole apartment complex, all the neighbors used to wonder what we were doing...

Oh yeah and the place I worked, they bought one of the very first Kodak digital cameras. It was 3 megapixels, it was like an old SLR but with an extra gadget that housed the hard drive that made it twice as big, it weighed a ton, the photos were full of noise - and brand new it cost them $12,000!!!!

Seriously, it's amazing how far technology has come in the last 20 years. Last years computer is too slow, last years camera sucks, last years monitor is garbage. Of course now the operating systems and other programs take up so much room and memory you have to get bigger and faster computers.

This laptop is old enough that it still has a floppy drive!!! lol, so considering all that, the fact that I can type this without the thing crashing and burning is a miracle.
